Oh help! English sounding muslim boys names

We have a lovely DS (Adam) and am now 15 weeks pregnant with what is probably another little boy according to the most recent scan.

Obviously we are delighted either way but a girl would have been easier as we have a handful of girls names that we love already.

The complicating factor is that we are an english muslim family, with both muslim and non muslim grandparents to bear in mind and a few german speaking relatives thrown in (just don't ask!)

Names we quite like,

Noah
Sami
Daniyal
Isaac

erm, that's it and we already have a daniyal and an isaac in our circle (although not that close).

can anyone suggest any more?

being told what I can and cant name my child

That is depressing! I never had any such nonsense from my muslim family.

Never heard of head shaving either nor been asked about the status of DSs foreskin. I suspect the head shaving is cultural - I've heard of it in India.

In fact they would have though I was mad if I thought I needed to call DS by a muslim name (we live in the UK). In DSs case it would be 'foreign' firstname, unpronounceable, very unusual surname.

DS grew up with 'don't you speak good english!', and 'so how long have you been here?'.

As a child he was the 'thieving arab' (although not an arab) and 'ho ho, don't borrow his pencil or he'll have your hand off!', so god knows what kids get these days.

As I said, my muslim relies tend to choose classical names, not religious ones and they come from a very 'old' family with lots of very respectible folks (theologians, etc) in it. Even a 'born again' relative named his children classical names from (Persian) literature and not religious ones. Traditionally they don't really give middle name where DH is from.

One culture doesn't trounce another. We went for names that are used commonly enough in the UK and Iran. Also my late fathers name, which my in-laws loved (because they loved my late father and were please we chose it).

Yes, nicename, I did wonder if Reuben was just Jewish, but assumed since Yusuf is Joseph, and Reuben was Joseph's brother, that it would be acceptable. There might be a more Muslim spelling of it though.

The child is 4 1/2!

It may be too old for name suggestions...

I really like Sami.

It's simply, easy for all languages and suitable for all stages of his life.

I like Kamran and Rayyan. I had a Kamran and a Rayyan in my class last year. They were names that I found easy to pronounce but also suited those children. Both were from Muslim families.

My Muslim friends have recently had a little boy named Kiran.

Googling seems to say it's commonly a girl's name in the Islamic culture, but I think it is definitely more boyish in the West and fits your British & Muslim heritage!

My nephew is half English Muslim and they were after the same. They went with Zane.

helentheheron · 02/11/2015 11:17

Ishmael

It's one of my favourite boy's names but my dp is having none of it as we have no cultural connections with it (grrr).

BeeMyBaby · 03/11/2015 21:46

Robyn we are going with a prophet middle name and a cultural first name, do you think your DH would go for that? As its going to be the middle name I chose a prophet story that meant a lot to me (Job- Ayyub) rather than simply because I liked the sound of the name.

I have a friend named Ozman, but we call him Ozzy for short. Smile

KAMRAN
ALI
ZAIN
KHALED
AIDEN (AYDIN)
ADAM
HARRIS

I think Kamran is an amazing name because it is pronounced the same way as Cameron, however it is fortunately a Muslim name. You can also go with Ali which I think is a neutral name, or Zain is the spelling of a Muslim name and I’m pretty sure English people spell it as Zayn or Zane.

KateTTC123 · 23/01/2019 09:16

Harris. My son is Harris and we chose it because we are Scottish but a muslim family beside us in the NICU said it was also a traditional muslim name.

I’m seeing a lot of threads about Arab/English baby names.

I found that this website was perfect as it listed all the names that work in English and Arabic. Good luck

Hi guys
I am having a boy and really like the name Isaac but pronounced Izik/izac. Do you think it's reasonable to expect relatives to be able to pronounce it that way as opposed eeesak. Some relatives prefer to pronounce it the Arabic way but I think the meaning is the same, it's just the language difference.
Thanks in advance
