Tiernan is a lovely Irish boys name.

Tierney is a surname and would only be used otherwise I imagine by daft Americans a la Brogan, Mackenzie, Cassidy etc boke

The trend of using surnames as first names originated in the states and now has sadly moved over here. In my opinion the names I mentioned sound awful, americanised and chavvy.

The daft comes in when you consider that the names being used for little girls i.e. Madison, Emerson etc are MALE surnames (meaning SON of). That to me is very much daft.

Tierney is a good Irish surname. It is not in use in Ireland as a first name.

OP - Conlaodh is lovely. There is also the aglicised version of Conleth which is also nice and easier to pronounce!

I've used Irish surnames as first names with my children, including one you've mentioned, and i don't find it chavvy or awful. It suits her well and i can't imagine her called anything different.

my boy is called Riley i guess from the surname o'Reilly..

and my DD Bracken (another surname)

but it's what we liked..

and i personally dont like "common" names i.e where you could know 10 kids with the same name... but if somebody else was too choose one for their DC who are we to say that they are daft for doing so..
