Miriam - what do you think?

We are seriously struggling for a girl's name for our baby due next week.

We have a bit of a Bible theme going on although it's not glaringly obvious from our other DCs names.

DH is dead keen on Miriam and I like it without loving it. Trouble is, I don't have any name in particular that I could say I love...

So what do you think? We don't know any Miriams at all and she would be the only one in the school for sure.

Any random thoughts/associations welcome

I like the French version - Myriam. Either way it's timeless and would last your DD a whole lifetime. Ruth is another name that sounds great no matter what age.

TiggyR · 14/08/2009 10:17

You think of Esther Rantzen, but not of Miriam Margolyes???

I don't hate it but I find it a bit middle aged, like Marjorie or Marian.

Ceolas · 14/08/2009 10:19

Miriam Margolyes is new on me I'm afraid.

Possibly my pregnancy hormones, but I am not keen on the way DH pronounces Miriam. Scottish accent does something funny to the first 'i' sound. Sort of at the back of the throat...

I love it. It is my sister's name and it is her birthday today. Maybe that's a sign

Ceolas · 14/08/2009 10:24

Ooh maybe. Would love to have baby today!

Ceolas - you STILL here lol sorry I used to hate that phrase .

I'm not keen on Miriam sorry, as you say especially when said with a Scottish accent, with the hard R.

I know it's really common right now but what about Grace? It's hard when you don't have a surname to compare it you see.

MaggieBelleVirgo · 14/08/2009 14:11

I really like it. I also like Marianne and Ruth and names that are quite ladylike and middle-aged chic, not old lady chic.

Miriam is lovely.

gloomysue · 14/08/2009 14:15

Miriam is lovely I think.

Thandeka · 14/08/2009 14:18

sorry my random associtions are all the Miriams I know are either matronly (miriam stoppard and margoyles)

Or completely EVIL and BONKERS and VILE. (ex best friend- in fact oldest friend).

So perhaps am not best one to comment.

juuule · 14/08/2009 14:18

Love it.
Considered it if we had had another girl(but we didn't)
I love Mim as a shortened form too.

NorkilyChallenged · 14/08/2009 14:18

I really love Miriam. It was on our shortlist for DD2 til we realised it was too similar to DD1 (Madeleine). I also liked Meredith and we didn't use it for the same reason.

MaggieBelleVirgo · 14/08/2009 14:19

Mimi is cute while she's a tiny baby too. Or Mirry

sweetkitty · 14/08/2009 14:23

Mimi is pretty

I tried saying it out loud with my accent (Glaswegian-ish) and it doesn't sound right sorry

screamingabdab · 14/08/2009 15:39

I like it. It's a feminine, but not too girly name

jkklpu · 14/08/2009 22:45

love Miriam and really like Marion, too

MissGreatBritain · 14/08/2009 22:59

Love it. Also really like Ruth, Esther, Matilda and Jane.

RortyDogOfTheRemove · 14/08/2009 23:03

Miriam Stoppard here too. That association would not increase its appeal for me.

plonker · 14/08/2009 23:07

I like Miriam. Ruth is ok.

Along similar lines is Meredith, which I love, and the nn Meri is just soooo cute!

Paolosgirl · 14/08/2009 23:10

I came on to say "love it", and now see Miriam Stoppard

Ach, what the hell. Go for it - she'll have retired soon, and all will be forgotten!

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 14/08/2009 23:17

DD has a good friend called Miriam, and the girls call her Mim or Mims, which I think is really sweet.
I also know a lovely Ruth, which is another name I really like.

TiggyR · 15/08/2009 10:57

Mathilda is gorgeous.

leggymambo · 15/08/2009 11:02

I like Miriam too, and Ruth. How about Margot as another alternative?

alexpolismum · 15/08/2009 14:47

I think it is a beautiful, elegant name.

A Miriam I used to know was generally known as Mima, this could be a nice alternative to Mimi.
