I love the name, but is it becoming too popular?

A little more than a few years ago perhaps. My DD is Sophia but she is 5 now and it wasn't that popular when I named her in 2004. I don't know about Sofia though- it is popular in the rest of Europe.

I think you should choose a name you kike regardless of popularity. It's a lovely name stick with it! Having a name that is too unusual can cause it's own problems.

There are a lot around-usually with a Sophia spelling. If you like it I wouldn't let the popularity bother you.

hester · 03/08/2009 22:04

I know one. I think it's becoming more common but I wouldn't think it TOO popular.

CherylCole · 03/08/2009 23:46

It's lovely, diffferent but classic

Kotek · 04/08/2009 12:45

Lots of Sophias but fewer Sofias.

MamaLazarou · 04/08/2009 14:57

I have never met a Sophia or a Sofia.

JeMeSouviens · 04/08/2009 15:00

I don't know any, only sophie, but it's on my list should I have a girl with the F spelling.

scottishmummy · 04/08/2009 15:09

i know someone who pronounces it soo-fy-ahhhh in a really drawn out Ahhhhhhhh

i would say so-fee-ah

getting increasingly popular with the goji berries and birkenstock mums

Scottish mummy. I have a Sofia with an "f" of course. I think its French. Has the meaning "wisdom" Everyone says my daughter looks like a Sofia. What does that mean?????

SE13Mummy · 17/01/2010 20:01

I know Sophias, Sofias and a Safiya (all pronounced so-fee-ah) but have never taught a class with more than one (of any spelling).

emsyj · 18/01/2010 10:52

There were 2 new baby Sophias (both Sophia not Sofia, but same difference IMO) in my department at work last year, which made it seem exceptionally popular given that there were only about 30 people in the team. That was in London. We are now in the north west and I don't know or know of any baby Sophias or Sofias, so maybe it's a regional thing.

shoobidoo · 18/01/2010 11:00

There is a Safia (pronounced Sa-fia) in my dd's class.

I LOVE the name Sofia.. not too popular at all in the UK. Sophia is very popular though, has definitely taken over from Sophie where I live (S London). I think the f spelling freshens it up a little and makes it more international, it was my girls name but just had a DS! damn

The f spelling makes it the capital of Bulgaria - to me that's poison-tipped brolly land. I'm old fashioned and had a friend Sophia as in Sof-eye-a way way back when.
