.

One of the local shops is run by Zimbabweans. They have an 18yr old DS (don't know his name) and we know the parents very well. DH is particularly good friends with them. They know all our DS's names and we never go in there with them without the DS's coming home with something for free

Anyhow.

A month or two back DH came back from there (having not been in regularly for a while because of where he was living) and said "I'm not sure but I think XXXX is pg" - she's always been a "largish" lady so he wasn't sure - but he reckoned the dress she was wearing was "maternity" type.

I "happened" to need to buy something from there a day or two later and I also wasn't sure.

Well today he went to see them and discovered she had another DS on the 26th June..........and they've called him the same name as DS1.

Now I've always been rather that my DS's were the only ones we knew we those names and none other that we knew of in our town. So now they've had a DS and called him the same name I'm ot sure whether to feel flattered that they've chosen the same name as DS1 or slightly miffed ,

Is it a common name in Zim? You know like Jack is here?

It's a nice thing, but I can see why you might be irritated. They're very different ages, so I doubt there will be many sentences in which it could be unclear which of them is being talked about.

No - not common like Jack. It's not uncommon either but I doubt it would be in the Top 100 type lists iykwim.

Well you say you know them quite well and are good friends but you didn't know the women was pregnant so personally I don't think you can be that good friends and therefore they might just like the name and it has nothing to do with you.

Libra - no they're closer friends to DH.

It's not normal in Zimbabwe to announce pregnancies, people generally only find out someone is pg

a) when a huge bump appears
b) when the baby is born
c) occasionally if it happens to come up in a conversation about them having an appointment to do with pg.

None of DH's family in Zimbabwe knew I was pg with any of our DS's until they'd been born.

It's a cultural thing.

How bizarre to my english brain which counts down the 3 months!

Do you actually socialise outside the shop? If you move away will you stay in contact?

Sorry I am just not seeing any reason why you would be pissed off.

I know - I found it odd too - I did tell my SIL - but she was alread living in the UK and used to the "12 weeks pg - woohoo we can tell the world" mentality.

No we don't socialise outside the shop. But that's probably something to do with the fact that they run it together (with their older son) and it's open 8am-11pm virtually 365 days a year. The only time they close it is when they go off to Zim to visit their family out there!!!

But would definitely stay in contact if we moved away (DH moved out of town and kept in regular contact with them).
