What middle name would go with Clover?

All the names I like seem to be nouns, so I need some inspiration for a middle name for Clover... (for my not-even-conceived-yet daughter!)

My best friend at school had a sister called Flora - she got a bit of ribbing and dairy jokes but really loves her name.

There's a Clover in 'What Katy Did'... um... suppose the marg is the closest reference point for most people though. Not a reason to avoid a name, in my opinion. My name rhymes with spotty, botty, potty etc, but I love it

Nico as in the Velvet Underground and Nico

  1. Clover Spreadable

  2. Roll me over in the Clover, Roll me over lay me down and do it again

With a name like Clover she'll become either a nun or a slapper

Try www.nameberry.com - you can search by number of syllables and initial and even by 'popularity' (although it's a US site so results may be skewed). Some dreadful suggestions on there, but if you have the dedication to plough through them you might just find one that grabs you!

Field?

Jammybodger · 22/07/2009 15:38

Of course it will lead to teasing, what are you thinking of? Aren't there any other names you like? Not only will the children laugh, the parents and teachers will too. It's like calling your son Dexter which would only be done in an urban area because every ruralperson knows it's a type of small cow.

Doesn't mean they aren't nice names, but don't blame anyone else if your poor dc comes running home to the taunts of MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sheeeesh some parents.

janeite · 22/07/2009 15:38

Clover is gorgeous!

I don't like it with Nico tbh and think it needs either a really traditional name: Clover Elizabeth / Clover Victoria - or a single syllable: Clover May / Clover Ann etc.

And Maniac - Clover Elise is lovely too.

franklymydear · 22/07/2009 15:40

If you think of it the word Chlamydia also has a sweet ring to it, it has all the right syllables in it to be a cute name

but you just wouldn't would you?

Clover up there with it I'm afraid - pretty word

oysterpots · 22/07/2009 15:44

I like plenty of other names:
Dot
Pearl
Violet
Betty (Buttercup)

No way am I choosing a dreary name solely on the basis of whether or not teasing might happen... Go ahead, Jammybodger, rip 'em to shreds!

Dot from Dorothy or Dorothea - good and works if she grows up to be serious or flighty (providing you give her the full name and just use Dot for short)

Pearl is OK I suppose

Violet will always be the endlessly chewing girl from Roald Dahl

Betty is a short-form of Elisabeth (see the Dot - Dorothy rationale)

My turn

I like

Kyra
Thea
Mathilde
Jessica

When you look at your gorgeous new baby you have to remember that they will grow up and they may well have a professional, responsible job. Bearing that in mind, what names can be cute when young but mature and sensible when older?

Dot would be Dotty, is that still ok? I think not

MamaLazarou · 22/07/2009 16:20

Ha ha ha ha ha: Clover!

oysterpots · 22/07/2009 16:28

I disagree - there are plenty of people around now with professional, responsible jobs whose interesting names haven't held them back

And in 20 years time the landscape will be totally different! Are you really suggesting only kids born now and given sensible names will be the ones with the good jobs? That's a bit of a sweeping statement

yes but they sound like tits

Hello I'm Dr Fifi Trixibelle I shall be your gynae today, how may I be of cervix?

Jammybodger · 22/07/2009 17:01

What happened to Zowie Bowie? He namechanged that's what! Children are always embarrassed when their parents try to be hip and cool. You can be sure if you name your son Rainbow Lightning and your daughter Clover Blossom they will name their own children John and Mary.

You don't have to choose boring names, there are plenty of names that do not have associations with strange diseases/car manufacturing/the dairy industry.

It is also a good idea to check what names mean in foreign languages (Ben is the kanji sign for toilet in Japanese)in this multicultural world of ours.

justlookatthatbooty · 22/07/2009 17:07

People on the names aspect of this site are very very silly. This is where all the frustrated bullies hang out and can't wait to poke at people with genuine requests for feedback. Besides only bored persons that watch too much TV would come up with all the sad advertising references above.
Clover is a fine name and if you like it, that's all that matters. Go for it and enjoy your (probably healthier than the jokers hanging out here) life when your LO arrives.

euwww sycophantically smug much?

maggievirgo · 22/07/2009 17:32

I know a Clover!

What about Joy or Faith?

Btw, nobody has said anything negative about the little clover I know. No eye-rolling or butter references have been made.

Jammybodger · 22/07/2009 17:33

As a matter of fact I spend what little free time I have Mning, certainly have no time to watch tv as well. Have you no sense of humour just?

Horton · 22/07/2009 17:33

Clover Elizabeth is lovely! I really like the name Clover and wanted it for DD but wasn't allowed. Clover Jane, Clover Harriet and Clover Mary all sound lovely to me, too. I would definitely go for a fairly classic middle name.

Jammybodger · 22/07/2009 17:38

How about Iva Clover Field?

Pops78 · 22/07/2009 17:39

Hi,

Not that I am judging anyone but I'm quite shocked by how mean people can be on here. The humour is fine but the nastiness is weird to me. I was named Poppy 30 yrs ago and nobody was really called it then, I think older people would have actually been even more horrible about it back then on first hearing it. I have always loved it and felt it made me stand out and be remembered in work as well as socially.

I think Clover is nice, good luch with conceiving.

maggievirgo · 22/07/2009 17:40

Clover Elizabeth is beautiful. Perfect balance of quirky eccentric and classic..
