Non-ugly Irish girls' names

I'm looking for suggestions of Irish names (broadest interpretation of same OK) for a girl that are not hideous.

Irish boys' names are easy, but girls are way trickier as so many of them are just not very attractive IMHO. Others are lovely when pronounced properly but very lumpen in the mouths of non-Irish speakers, and DH (and family) are English.

So, what am I not considering? The more unusual the better here.

Sinéad
Catríona
Cara
Neasa
Síofra
Eithne (Eth-na)

Clodagh is pronounced Clo-da. It's the name of a river in Tipperary. And there was an Irish Euorovision entrant years ago called Clodagh.

Ah, I thought it was Clo-da. I am English, taught supply in a Catholic school and came across a Clodagh. Asked her twice how to pron but becuase I am a bit deaf didn't hear her response properly so ended up not calling her anything all day!

I'll know now.

I'm a fluent Irish speaker, why on earth would you make the assumption that I think it is ugly or that I am ignorant about Irish names?

Madeyeballs, it sounds like the OP is Irish....

Síofra - yes, that might be a runner alright, thanks ludog

Some of these are more modern than the ones I'd mostly been considering, useful...

I go hot and cold on Clodagh.

I like Aisling. Have always liked Aisling.

skidoodle · 22/07/2009 15:45

My Granny used to call us "alanna" when we were little, so in my head it's more a term of endearment than a name iyswim

Just came back to suggest Siofra (can't do fadas!). A friend who just moved from here has a Siofra - I hadn't heard it before but really liked it.

GorgonsGin · 22/07/2009 15:50

Grainne - I always thought it was very pretty

muggglewump · 22/07/2009 15:52

I have a Niamh so I'd have to say that is the best to use

skidoodle · 22/07/2009 16:02

Réiltín is cute - very unusual, I've never heard it used as a name.

I'm not mad on -ín names in general, although they can work very well.

There's no way DH's family would manage Réiltín though - the narrow t sound is too hard to get right.

Also, sounds like it's your name to use. You kind of want to be the only Réiltín around

Caolin (pronounced Kee-Lynn for those who might not know) or original irish spelling, Caoilfionn, meaning 'slim, slender and bright' is very pretty, I think.

Also love Aisling and Roisin (Row-sheen).

Buda · 22/07/2009 16:14

I am an Irish Fiona too Fio! But was always told that it was a Scottish name. A friend's sis is Feena which is the closest Irish name I have heard other than Fionn.

I had a very Irish maiden name too! The pride of the Coombe in fact.

MissyBellatrix · 22/07/2009 16:14

Oh, and love Sorcha!

swedesinsunglasses · 22/07/2009 16:15

Molly

MamaLazarou · 22/07/2009 16:26

cikecaka · 22/07/2009 16:27
