Jackie for a boy?

The more I think about this, the more I like it.
I don't want to use Jack and have Jackie as a nickname. I wonder if I'm influenced by the dashing Jackie Merrick from Emmerdale Farm.
So, what do you think? Dh is in agreement, now to see what others think, so please be honest

He'll most likely get stick for it until he's 30+. Everyone associates it with a girls name, so I wouldn't if it was me...but I guess he'd learn to fight really fast (like that song called 'A boy named Sue')

madambugle · 09/07/2009 01:26

Hmmm, well I was thinking that there won't be many female Jackies (due to Jacqueline being out of fashion now) in his age group, so that won't be so much of an issue?

but no.

Normal Geordie form of Jack - Jackie Milburn, 'Jackie' Charlton et al.

If you live elsewhere I'm not so sure.

ilovesprouts · 09/07/2009 08:56

no sorry, it always makes me think of a girls name .

Mammina · 09/07/2009 09:30

I used to have an uncle jackie, I like it, although knowing what kids are like he may get teased

bubblagirl · 09/07/2009 09:42

i know a boy called jackie his changed it now as it is mainly known as a girls name the mentality of people made his life very hard butt o be honest he was surrounded by jackies and they were all women i think its too girly after seeing what he went through

SoupDragon · 09/07/2009 09:44

No!

sleeplessinstretford · 09/07/2009 09:55

i know a little boy called John (actually he's 15 now but anyway) his parents have always called him Jackie-they aren't Geordies btw,
I like it, his middle name is Beau so he's Jacky Beau

Prosecco · 09/07/2009 09:57

I have a Jack who is affectionatley known as Jackie. Why don't you want to do this? This way there will be no confusion on registers etc.

Prosecco · 09/07/2009 09:59

affectionately

madwomanintheattic · 09/07/2009 09:59

what, like the girl's comic?

use it as a nn for john or jack, but jackie? tis my mil's name, so even she would have rofl'd if we'd called ds1 that...

Buda · 09/07/2009 10:01

A friend of my Dad's is Jackie. I never questioned it tbh but I think I prob wouldn't do it. Too much teasibility.

Frasersmum123 · 09/07/2009 10:12

I wouldnt.

harrwet · 09/07/2009 12:21

Was Jackie Merrick dashing

midnightexpress · 09/07/2009 12:24

I think it depends where you live. It's (or was at least, not sure if it is nowadays)quite common in the north to use it as a diminutive of Jack, but not so in the south, where I think it would be seen as a girl's name.

yama · 09/07/2009 12:27

There was a footballer in Scotland called Jackie McNamara. He'd be mid 30's now I'd say. His Dad was also a footballer with the same name.

I like it.

RubyLove1 · 09/07/2009 12:44

I thought of Jackie Chan straight away, but if you like the name use it.

JemL · 09/07/2009 16:31

Oh, I was so traumatised when Jackie from Emmerdale accidentally shot himself...and was so relieved to see him alive and well on breakfast television shortly thereafter, promoting his single...I think it was called "lend us a tenner / tenor"

I like it!

Picante · 09/07/2009 16:33

I know one - but it's short for Jackson which I think is well cool!

there is a wee boy in DD1's class called Jackie, he's a right wee rough and tumble boy and has really made it his own - although this coming from a woman who has a DD called Dylan

liliputlady · 09/07/2009 22:19

I think it's a good idea to call him Jack and maybe Jackie affectionately at home, as Prosecco suggested.
I certainly wouldn't choose Jackie - life is hard enough without being given a name that everyone is going to tease you for. Sorry!

MamaLazarou · 10/07/2009 08:44

Jackie for a boy?

No.

goomum · 10/07/2009 09:38

I grew up in the South East and there was a boy in my class called Jackie and no one thought it was a girl's name. He was a very boy boy, quite rough and tumble... depends if your son is like that or more in touch with his feminine side I reckon. Call him Jackie but allow him to shorten to Jack as soon as he wants. Or go for a longer name like Jacoby?
