Nicholas- thoughts?

So I think Nicholas is the current one that DH doesn't despise, but I'm not 100% sold on any name at the moment---- what are your thoughts on Nicholas? I think what's putting me off is the horror of him being named 'nicky' at any point in his life...?

Thanks!

I really love it and I love Nicky for a little boy

lastboxoftampons · 17/07/2009 14:56

I love it. But is my cousin's name so couldn't use it.

Only derrogatory comment - we knew a guy everyone called Nick the Dick - but he really did suit that nn

Thanks for more feedback- I think my issue with Nicky is that I knew a few horrid girls at school called Nicky nn for Nicola, so would hate to bestow that association on my child. Or have anyone else bestow it. Also it's a bit 'westlife' which isn't my thing.
It's cute though.. I think I'm most horrified by the prospect that I'd end up calling DS toddler Nicholas Nicky myself! Aagh!!

Love it! It's my little brother's name and he is a thoroughly nice chap too! He is usually called Nick now (never Nicky which I dislike too). I think we may have occasionally called him Knickerless when we were small ( 3 bossy big sisters) but I don't think anyone else ever did!

sockmonster · 17/07/2009 19:41

still front-runner I think, thank you for reassurance on thoroughly nice chaps named Nicholas!

It's not too boring is it??... ooh I should stop thinking! The more I think about names the more flaws I find..

boring is good - means there won't be lots of them as everyone else goes for "exotic" names

(*I have 2 boys with "boring" names; they're the only under 25s we've come across with the same name)

Nicky is a very upper class shortening of Nicholas. The more exclusive public schools are full of Nickys.

It makes me think of Mog and I think it's a cool classy nn.

My ds has the Greek version of this name (Nikolaos). I don't care that it's really common over here, I've always loved it! Don't worry about what other people think, if you like it, go for it! It's you who will be calling out "Nick, come here!" every day, not them, so it's basically down to you if you like it or not.

HarryB · 02/08/2009 20:22

Oh boo. If I have another boy, I want to call him Nicholas (Henry as middle name). V. poular though isn't it. Mind you, I fucked up royally (pun intended) with DS's name, Harry (middle name William) after FiL. Only now do I think, bugger, everyone will think I'm a royal stalker, rather than paying respects to dead FiL. Doh!

MamaLazarou · 04/08/2009 14:57

Knickerless

Nicky is nice, though.

YorkshireRose · 04/08/2009 15:11

My DS is a Nicholas. His friends call him Nick, the family calls him Nickster.

screamingabdab · 04/08/2009 16:08

I like Nicholas, but not Nick

Have you considered Nigel ?

HerHonesty · 04/08/2009 21:11

like...

sockmonster · 13/08/2009 12:48

at Nigel... er, no, I hadn't considered that! I think Nicholas has turned out to be a girl, by the way! Will have to save it for imaginary 'thoroughly nice chap' of a DS when I have once
