What do you think to the name Rishi?

Maybe imagine him as a man you've never met before - first impressions of what he might be like.

And do you have any other suggestions? I'd like an Indian name which is easily pronounceable for English speakers.

Rishi is lovely. I would imagine him as rather tall and gangly, with an expensive, well-made suit.

If I were a bit less white, I would go for Omar.

serin · 22/06/2009 11:12

Fab, it sounds fun.

letmethink · 22/06/2009 11:13

I have a son called Rishi and I sometimes wonder whether it sounds like a nickname of a longer name to some people.

I agree with Mama, I would imagine someone tall and slim built with sophisticated clothes.

dizzydixies · 22/06/2009 11:14

like it too

ilovemydogandmrobama · 22/06/2009 11:15

I love Rohan

Tambajam · 22/06/2009 11:16

Amil?

MamaLazarou · 22/06/2009 11:18

How about Amir?

littleabc · 22/06/2009 11:30

I love Rohan too, ilovemydog, but I recently realised it was some sort of walking attire shop. Which may not be a bad thing as it makes the name "recognisable" I suppose.

Thanks to the other responses too. Funny that some people imagine a tall, slim person because if he takes after his Dad, that could well be his build.

Although if he takes after me he'll be a little - erm - cuddlier.

Ashwin is a nice Indian name, pronounced 'Ushwin' by my Gujerati speaking dh.

I have seen several meanings for this name from 'star light' to 'wealthy '. It is also an old Anglo Saxon surname meaning 'spear friend '

littleabc · 22/06/2009 11:59

Oooh Ashwin's good, hadn't thought of that one.

Yes, I can hear my (Gujarati) MIL saying it and I know what you mean about the pronunciation. The first letter would sound a little bit like the a in "around" or "across" I think?

Anyway, yes, thanks.

Thiiiiiink, but not sure, I might still prefer Rishi.

(goes off to check whether Ashwin was the Dad in The Kumars and wonders whether that would be a good thing or a bad thing)

Rishi, is quite nice, but not all that strong sounding, IME. It does sound a bit like a diminutive

Rohan is also good because of Lord of the Rings connection (Rohan is the place with the horse-riding people)

mumoverseas · 22/06/2009 18:46

Zakir, could be Zak for short?

boodleboot · 22/06/2009 19:18

sounds like a drunk man saying richie IMO

i love Asher for a indian/english boy.

janeite · 22/06/2009 19:22

I don't like Rishi at all, sorry.

I like Boodle's suggestion of Asher. Tariq? Nadeem? Atiq?

janeite · 22/06/2009 19:23

I like Rohan a lot, too.

SoupDragon · 22/06/2009 19:28

I love Rohan. Rehan is another I've seen amongst DSs friends.

ScummyMummy · 22/06/2009 19:28

Rishi's ok. I like Amrit and Akash and Ravi even better though.

ThePhantomPlopper · 22/06/2009 19:32

I like Arun, am very tempted to use it if we decide to have another baby as DD has an Indian name.

ThePhantomPlopper · 22/06/2009 19:34

Rajiv? Means Lotus flower.

Jacksmama · 22/06/2009 19:35

Acquaintances of mine chose the name Seth for their firstborn boy. He is Indian, she is white. They said it worked in both languages.

Sidge · 22/06/2009 19:48

I like Ravi. I saw it in a book and liked it.

How about Ajay, Ashvin, Hari, Inesh, Jeevan, Sunil, Tarun or Vijay?

hk78 · 22/06/2009 19:51

i have a friend with the name Thayil

He is lovely

Jacksmama · 22/06/2009 19:53

Sorry, hit post too soon.

Their second boy is named Devan. The father's name is Gordev so it's a bit of his name too.

JennyTaylier · 22/06/2009 19:54

Kiran/Sanjay?

runawayquickly · 22/06/2009 19:59

I absolutely love the name Rishi. Good taste! I know a Rishi, I'm sure his mum told me it means 'wise man' or 'sage' something along those lines. He's a beautiful boy.
I also love Hari (sun) and Raj (King.
Oh, nd if you ask me, never canvas opinion on names... there will always be someone who disagrees and upsets you. I just didn't say a word then dropped the bombshells with my two after they were born...!
