Heard a boy's name I love but suspect it will be deeply unpopular...

On Secret Millionaire, there was a lad digging the garden who said his name was Gwynion. I think it's beautiful, but I have a nasty feeling it's going to get panned. It sounds Welsh to me, but this man certainly wasn't, and I haven't had much luck googling it.

Go on - destroy the illusion for me!

How do you say it?

shootfromthehip · 11/06/2009 10:43

I quite like it- but it does sound like 'onion' if my pronouciation is right?

Lizzylou · 11/06/2009 10:45

I like it, I like a lot of Welsh names though.
I lived in Wales for 4 years and have never heard of Gwynion, but it is almost certainly Welsh I'd say.

oxcat1 · 11/06/2009 10:46

Well, I could be wrong, but the way I heard it it was pronounced
Gwe-nion, so not really like Onion, as the first syllable was more like an 'e' than an 'o'.

I think it is nice.
Dh has a friend called Gwydaff (sp!), who goes by Gwyn.
I think it is Welsh!
It is cute though and Gwyn is a nice nn, but i wouldnt use it personally unless i had some Welsh heritage somewhere.

tummytickler · 11/06/2009 10:46

Oooops that was meant to be Gwyndaff!

oxcat1 · 11/06/2009 10:47

I don't think the television chap was Welsh - he had only come to the UK a few years ago from somewhere like Nigeria, hence being homeless for a while and so grateful for the help the charity had provided to get him back on his feet. It does sound very Welsh though....

Was it Cenion?

I can't find any reference to it on Google but am sure I have seen a name spelled this way before and would match the prononciation of it???

oxcat1 · 11/06/2009 11:10

I really don't know, as just heard it prounounced rather than saw it written down, but the start did sound like the start of Gwyneth, hence assuming it was spelt Gwynion.

Hmmm.

Could it have been Gwion?

hullygully · 11/06/2009 11:49

Gandalf?

oxcat1 · 11/06/2009 11:52

Gandalf?

Don't think it was Gwion as seemed to have too many syllables. I'll just have to watch the programme again and find out!

Could it have been Gwydion?(In Welsh mythology, Gwydion is a magician appearing prominently in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi)

sonniboo · 11/06/2009 12:29

I like the ending (-nion) - sounds very masculine. Never heard of Gwynion before, but I actually like it.
