This is our choice for a boy, girls names are undecided.
We'd love to have honest opinions, as we're keeping it to ourselves until the baby is here.

i did immediatley think of Grange Hill (didn't Roland find Zammo when he od'd?)

But if i met a RL Roland I would think it was a cool name and not think about the grange hill Roland.

Not as bad choice as i first thought.

stressed2007 · 06/06/2009 14:14

Roland will for ever be the fat bespeckled boy with no friends in grange hill - anyone 30+ would know this

A big no from me

SouthMum · 06/06/2009 14:22

Roland will be pushed to the ground and will be the one the other kids always "pile on" to.....

charmedjane · 06/06/2009 14:26

I'll speak to dp, look up Grange Hill Roland, then come back. Possibly with a shortlist.

The Grange Hill thing will mean nothing at all to DS's peers.

It's not a name I would choose, but if you like it, go for it.

What about Ronald, Herbert, Howard, Dennis...

wombleprincess · 06/06/2009 15:16

erm no no no no no. the rat...

blossomhills · 06/06/2009 16:12

Grange Hill

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 06/06/2009 19:53

charmed Jane this is roland!

usernametaken · 06/06/2009 22:32

If you are using Lando as a nn, then what about Landon as a first name?

Jic · 06/06/2009 22:49

My Dad's name.
He gets Ro for short. I'm not just biased but I think that's cute for a little boy, and Roland is a great name when you're older, he won't be a baby for long.

suwoo · 06/06/2009 22:54

I can't see Roland written down without thinking Ro-Land. I'm the same with Marlene too, I can only say it in a Boycee style....Marleeeene.

Clary · 06/06/2009 23:22

I like Roland.

It's a family name for me but DH said a flat no. He said "Roll and butter" (not that our surname is Butter, I'm not daft) or Roland Rat but I don't think anyone will remember that in 10 yrs' time.

I still like it.

(I'm well over 30 btw and never heard of the one on Grange Hill. Maybe too far over 30 )

Now Tucker....

BoysAreLikeDogs · 06/06/2009 23:24

just say no

Paolosgirl · 06/06/2009 23:27

RO-land from Grange Hill or Roland Rat. I'm 40, and I remember the poor chap from GH!

I don't like it, sorry.

KathyBrown · 06/06/2009 23:31

Oh God it's awful please reconsider.

see charmedjane you and I are wrong

In its favour I don't know any, not one, I mean children with the name, which makes a change.

Tinker · 06/06/2009 23:38

I do think Grange Hill and also 'Testament of Youth' (did it at A level) and Vera Brittain going on about f*ing Roland all the time (I was young then). But I don't dislike it. What about Orlando?

Clary · 06/06/2009 23:41

Ah yes Vera Brittan, y'see I loved Testament of Youth.

Doozle · 06/06/2009 23:42

Another big no no to Roland,I'm afraid.

Again for Grange Hill and Roland Rat reasons

RockinSockBunnies · 06/06/2009 23:44

No!

Had I been a boy I would have been a Roland. I thank my lucky stars daily that I'm a girl and hence not saddled with the name!

Roland from Grange Hill and Roland Rat immediately spring to mind. Also, to me, it's an ugly-sounding name. Sorry.

Tinker · 06/06/2009 23:51

Clary, I think I'd love 'Testament of Youth' now, or at least, appreciate it.

Clary · 06/06/2009 23:54

You always hate the books you study at school, don't you?

Can't stand Silas Marner myself (tho maybe Hepzibah is due a revival...?)

Tinker · 06/06/2009 23:56

She was always going on about Buxton as well, which became Buxton. Now, Buxton is lovely but forever tinged for me

Clary · 06/06/2009 23:58

Oh I forgot she was from Buxton - local angle for me then (sort of)
