My partner and I can't agree on the name. He likes Ariel, Bronte, Solveig.
I keep changing my mind but at the moment I like Monet, Elodie, Lela..

Do you think that Ariel is going to be associated with the washing powder?
Is Solveig going to be difficult to spell and pronounce? ('solvee')

The only names that we would both consider but not anywhere near our top choices are Annabel, Evangeline (do you think it would ever be used in full), Amber and Isla all of which are quite popular but we both prefer unusual names..
Please give us you honest opinions

Also, what do you think about first name and the surname starting with the same letter?
Thank you!

Here is the list again:

Ariel
Bronte
Monet
Elodie
Lela
Solveig
Annabel
Evangeline
Amber
Isla

Evangeline is beautiful. No need to shorten.

fizzpops · 07/06/2009 11:03

Ariel - I agree, washing powder unfortunately, although pretty
Bronte - Like the idea but not a pretty looking name
Monet - don't like
Elodie - don't like
Lela - don't like
Solveig - I would pronounce (possibly incorrectly) as Solve-egg if I saw it. I like it in principle but doesn't look pretty and will be problematical
Annabel - like
Evangeline - love and Evie is a pretty nn
Amber - don't like
Isla - don't like

19fran76 · 07/06/2009 11:05

Evangeline is a beautiful name. Pretty indifferent to Elodie. Solveig, not keen. Prefer other posters suggestion of Sylvie - pretty. Don't like Bronte at all. Annabel, not great.

Tortington · 07/06/2009 11:13

Ariel- MERMAID - TRY HARD
Bronte - try hard
Monet - try hard
Elodie - americanism try hard
Lela - spell it properly or call it your dog
Solveig - i dont know how this is pronounced but a i sense a try hard theme

Annabel - fine - but dull
Evangeline - american try hard
amber - fine but dull
Isla - fine but dull

MrsMattie · 07/06/2009 12:41

I also thought Solveig was Solv -ayg

lizzyboo · 07/06/2009 12:48

Bronte is lovely, but wait until you see her. You will know what you should call her then. We had loads of names for my daughter, the night before she was born the radio was on and hey jude was playing. When they put her in my arms I looked at her and knew she was Jude. It really suits her and I don't know anyone else with a girl called Jude. If you give her a really different name chances are she wont thank you for it when she's older, she wil get a total ribbing at school.

CrushWithEyeliner · 07/06/2009 13:02

Annabel is beautiful - the only one I really like, Evangeline is pretty too but I suspect she will be called Evie which I think is awful.

sophieandbelly · 09/06/2009 12:12

love -elodie
evangeline (mayb evie for short?)
isla (is a fav of mine)

mmmm the others!
annabel- sorry cant stand
bronte, monet - think sound kinda cheap
and chavvy

coralie66 · 09/06/2009 12:53

I love Ariel and wanted to use it for my dd but my husband vetoed it because of the washing powder. It is a lovely name though. Of the others I think Elodie is the nicest.

wombleprincess · 09/06/2009 13:04

amber and isla are nice, the rest are not to my taste.

lastboxoftampons · 09/06/2009 16:46

I like Isla and Evangeline.

The problem with Ariel is that it really should be Arielle - pronounced ar-ee-ELLE, like Sebastian the crab would, not like Flounder would! I really hate that Ariel - pronounced as if it was something performed on a trapeze! - has become so popular.

Lissya · 09/06/2009 17:19

Elodie is absolutely beautiful. Assured, unusual, elegant and works well on a little girl as much as an adult.

I am I don't have a new DD to call Elodie!

LaDiDaDi · 09/06/2009 17:22

I like Elodie. I considered it for dd but was vetoed by dp. I'll be trying it again this time.

VeryAnnieMary · 09/06/2009 17:39

Good for you for sticking to the names you like. As far as first name-last name alliteration goes, I'm quite partial to it myself (being Welsh). Sadly can't with my married surname (whyohwhydidIchangeit?) so I like to encourage others to alliterate if at all possible.

Darwina · 09/06/2009 22:07

Hi Lola 11.

Our dd finally arrived on Sunday and luckily suits the name we'd hoped to use - Elodie.

She's adorable if that's any help (but I am a wee bit biased).

Responses from relies and friends have been great - even 90 year old Grans are getting into it really well.

I love it for its versatility - so many nicknames if she wants to Elle, Ella, Ellie and our old friend Elodie grew up as Lodie, which is sticking for us at the moment.

We're struggling for a middle name now - May or Pippa (family connection) are on the list.

P.S. I'm new here - could someone tell me what dd means? Dear daughter/darling daughter......

Emmy84 · 09/06/2009 22:16

You could have the opinion of 100's of people but it's only your views that count. As long as your thinking about the child and how the name will effect them then that's all that matters.
But just to put my two pennies worth in.......please DON'T call your daughter solveig!!
Elodie is my fav of the bunch.

Oh and Darwina, I think May sounds nice with Elodie

plonker · 09/06/2009 23:19

Solveig - I wouldn't have a clue how to pn it (and certainly wouldn't know how to spell it). Would this be an issue for you? If so, I wouldn't use it.

Bronte - I don't really like this, although I can't really explain why ...

Elodie - Beautiful. Very pretty and elegant ...and french!

Evangeline - Not keen. It's the angie bit that puts me off.

Annabel - Pretty.

My favourite of your list is Elodie. I'm also a fan of alliterative names, so thats another plus point for Elodie

kalo12 · 09/06/2009 23:22

i know a monet think its lovely actually

smallchange · 09/06/2009 23:29

How about Sylvie instead of Solveig? Similar sound but easier to spell/pn if you are unfamiliar with it.

TwoSunnyDays · 10/06/2009 11:07

Elodie Isla has a nice ring to it

pandavark · 10/06/2009 11:19

Ariel - ok, sounds a bit snobby
Bronte - really bad and inappropriate for a child
Monet - really bad and inappropriate for a child
Elodie - quite nice
Lela - quite nice
Solveig - i like it, she might have trouble with it
Annabel - average
Evangeline - nice
Amber - common
Isla - nice

i'd pick elodie, isla or lela

Lola11 · 19/06/2009 09:39

Darwina - congratulations! Beautiful name and it was my first choice but my dp didn't like it enough.
Thanks everyone so much! Just to let you know that we named our little girl Bronte, it was my dp's choice no 1 and she had no name for few days as I wasn't sure but it is growing on me and i like it more and more every day. It is not a popular name so people will either love it or hate it but i think it is different and it goes very well with the unusual name we chose for our first girl. We chose very common, classic middle name and hope she will like it if not happy with her first name.. Thank you all for your help.
