Name for a fictional 11 year old girl please

Well you lot seem to know what you are talking about, so would you mind suggesting / commenting on names for a fictional girl I am trying to create?

I am writing a book for ages 9-12. Three girls aged 11 are fiends. Two girls are Polly and Annabel. Need a name for the third friend. Any suggestions?

Constraints are:

  • Needs to be distinct from the other two names so that it is easy to tell the characters apart
  • I want to avoid having all three girls with predictable middle class girly names, IYKWIM! i.e. reject Charlotte, Olivia, Lucy, etc
  • I want a slightly "older" name, i.e. not top of today's popular list. But is anyone actually called Karen, Rachel, etc these days? Is that believable?
  • The character's dad is something like a property developer, made his own money but not born to it
  • She is currently Melanie which I think works for her, but I want to change it as it sounds too similar to Annabel (Mel, Bel, both 3 syllables)
  • It would be ideal if it worked with Sykes as a surname.

So sorry that I am asking about a fictional person's name when there are real babies out there needing names! But if you can spare the time it would really help me out.

Any suggestions?

you need a name that both has a sort of imperious ring to it but can also be (perhaps shortened?) affectionate and approachable

like, say, from Georgiana to George?

What about Maggie?

Maggie Sykes?

Why does it have to be Sykes?

I think Jessica Sykes sounds good. Quite 'angular' at first but when she comes over all nice and kind it could be nicknamed Jess or Jessie. It's a very definite name.

It doesn't have to be Sykes. It would juist be another thing for my brain to have to think up again if I changed it!

Ruth Sykes sounds great and is a timeless name, as are Elisabeth, Catherine, Sarah and Rachel. Agree Harriet a very good choice too - also what about Heather,Hannah, Miriam, Grace,Emma, Alice, Frances?

Love this thread. I posted for a fictional 11 year old girl before (but didn't let on).

This is great, thanks. Loads of great suggestions. I have come down to:
Rebecca Sykes
Jessica Sykes
Rachel Sykes

There are other names suggested which I think are really good but I can't use them because they are DD's name, my name, my mum's name, another character's name, etc! (Sorry if your suggestion is one of these.) As it is, if I use Jessica then another character in the book needs a new name... . But that one is less critical and easier to replace if needed.

I like Rebecca but my only problem is how to shorten it, which 11 year old girls do. The book is narrated in the first person by Polly, so it has to look and feel convincing on the page as she tells the story. Does she say Bec, Becca, Becky, or Becs? (Jessica is easy to shorten to Jess, and Rachel is just Rachel, which is fine.)

Becs...that is what my friends daughter is referred, too...
