kids with same initials - a problem?

We are considering Evan for dc2, assuming it's a boy. We already have an Elliot. I always thought that giving kids names with the same first sound was bit unimaginative (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone), but it's the only name we can think of that we really like. Also, is it a problem to have the same initials from the point of view of confusion with mail etc. when they're older? Dh and his brother both have g names and he says it's never been an issue. What do people think?

Flipping heck - you've found a name you both like (really like Evan by the way) - go for it!

PenelopePitstops · 25/05/2009 14:37

go for it, im one of three with the same initial, its brilliant!

make sure middle names are different for future post etc but it doesnt cause many problems!

ramonaquimby · 25/05/2009 14:42

I have 3 kids and 2 of them have same first initial as me - they are both still young and don't get any post, really can't see it causing problems in the future.

Ok, ta for the positive responses. It's the only thing that puts me off the name slightly. Also, Ramona, love the name, those books were great!

Not a problem at all, if it's the name you like, use it. Unless you expect your sons to live with you into their 40s and all their mail to arrive together, I really don't see this ever being a problem!

RustyBear · 25/05/2009 15:27

sockmonster - why do you think the kids won't start getting mail until they are in their 40's? Most of the mail in this house is for DD & DS!

I may be prejudiced about similar names though, as MIL has the same initial as me, so is therefore also Mrs R Bear, which she has used in the past as an excuse to open my mail....

icedgemsrock · 25/05/2009 15:28

i think siblings with the same intitial is a bit twee! sorry but you did ask!

mrsgboring · 25/05/2009 15:28

My parents did this deliberately to save money on nametapes It wasn't a huge deal, but we did have post confusion once we were old enough for bank accounts etc. Also, we were very close in age and similar looking so people used to confuse us all the time, which didn't help sibling rivalry issues. The similar names probably didn't help matters there. A small point to bear in mind if you do use the name.

sockmonster · 25/05/2009 15:51

Hmm it just seems to me that post for children tends to have their first name, then initial, then surname, whereas post for big people is just initial/surname.
I don't think having the same initials is a big problem, really.

If you do, how about having both DS with first initial E, then give them a different middle name? No confusion there, bank statements etc etc always have an inital on them.

totalmisfit · 25/05/2009 15:56

confuses the hell out of me when i meet siblings whose names start with the same letter. i know sibs Sophie and a Stephanie and for the life of me i can never remember which is which, but then i'm crap with names...

Ponders · 25/05/2009 15:58

Same first initial is OK as long as they have a different 2nd initial.

I know a family where mum, dad & 3 kids are all the same initial - that is just wrong

SesHasFinallyBecomeAMum · 25/05/2009 16:02

Before I was married, I had the same initials as my older brother and my mum! In fact my brother and I had the same middle initial too!!
Never caused us any problem and never seemed a big deal. My parents just went with the names they wanted and the same initials was a coincidence.
If that's the name you like, go for it

Ponders · 25/05/2009 17:48

Ah, but you would have been a Mrs, a Mr & a Miss. (If your brother had been a sister it could have caused problems...)

We have the same here, it's usually OK but occasionally something arrives without a title - then the first one to see it opens it

Mistymoo · 25/05/2009 17:51

When they are older, don't introduce them as the two E's. We were always introduced as the 3 S's and I didn't like it.

icedgemsrock · 25/05/2009 20:20

totalmisfit, it confuses me too, i'm always getting erin and eliza, harriet and hannah, Jake and Joel mixed up!!

BikeRunSki · 25/05/2009 20:54

I am one of 4 children, of which my brother (no.1 ) and I (no. 3) have the same first initial. Never any probs growing up. We were not given the same intials deliberately. Now though, my DH and I have the same first two intials and surname. That is confusing! Mr AB Jones and Mrs AB Jones are always opening each other's post!
