Maybe I was too harsh earlier, but taking up points made already, I don't feel average on the inside, I feel very special and totally unique, but as a five foot 3, brown haired, size 12ed mother of two in a pleasant but not wealthy suburb, I have to reveal my specialness slowly. I can#t afford to offer it up with an invitation to judge.

boodleboot · 25/05/2009 16:01

wow....i actually went straight out after my opening post so have come back to a lovely long conversation....it seems to have divided you lot....i agree with people that have said it would be best to get in early with a nickname....i don't like Shez or Sherri to be honest but think that Zade....pronounced ZARDHER would be lovely - or Zah Zah for a little one...i think spelling of names becomes pretty irrelevent as you grow and it would be a ncie name to grow up with or into....

shezza?

Thunderduck · 25/05/2009 16:18

I think some people could never grown into it though. If you look like Anne Widdecombe for example, and were called Sheherazade it would be absurd.
Not many people could make such a name work imho.

boodleboot · 25/05/2009 16:24

if i have a daughter who looks like ann widdecombe then she can feel free to address herself as Shaz .....i am fairly confident this would not be the case tho but i do get the point you are making.....quick question tho...i'd be more disturbed to see a fat and ugly [sorry ann...]child called isabella as i always associate that with a pretty child....at least with Sheherazade you haven't really got any preconceived notions or at least i haven't really....other than i would expect her to be dark but Sheherazade goldsmith is blonde....

erm, thats not really a question is it....sorry

How about Zarie as an shortened version? If you love it go for it, if your child hates it in the future, there's always deed poll!

cheesesarnie · 25/05/2009 16:31

are you serious?

RedCharityBonney · 25/05/2009 17:45

Please don't!

Write a novel and name your leading lady it - but don't saddle a real human with it, for the love of god!

Mintyy · 25/05/2009 17:51

Oh please do it boodleboot. I was flying the flag for Sheherazade on your original thread. I have decided it is pronounced Cherazade (with the second "he" silent and the emphasis on the za ) and I think tis truly the prettiest girls name in the whole world and, as I am not going to have any more babies, I am PLEADING with you to go for it .

boodleboot · 25/05/2009 18:30

mintyy i hear your plea and must confess sadly this is a bit hypothetical i am not pregnant at the min as recently miscarried BUT we are trying again and i will make sure this gets put at the top of our list of 'are we brave enough' names....DH loves it so ou never know....he doesn't like many names really either

What about Eliza with the nn ZaZa.

jkklpu · 25/05/2009 20:07

more common spelling in English is SCheherazade.
I think it's a beautiful name but, unless your family looks remotely Persian, it would be pretty difficult to carry off and could risk being unbelieveably poncey as a result.

SheherazadetheGoat · 25/05/2009 21:33

if you like it use it.

Ninjacat · 25/05/2009 22:50

I know a little girl called Sheherazade (pronounced She her iz ad) apparently it's from Arabian Nights

boodleboot · 26/05/2009 21:36

it is indeed from arabian nights and yes jkkplu any off spring of mine and my DH will most likely be dark eyed and certainly dark haired...so could get away without being totally poncetastic perhaps....

i was in the doctors today tho getting tetanus [very painful]due to a dog bite [ouch] and thought about calling the name out and realised i would prob be a bit to say it out loud...especially as a really chavvy girl came in and was shouting out 'Sharianna' which was making me cringe...not sure why these are linked other than both beginning with Sh-....anyway....

Go for it. For short, it could be Sherry, or Zad, or Hairy.

ADealingMummy · 13/06/2009 21:02

I think it's a beautiful name . If you don't go with the name you love , you will regret it.
Be prepared for ignorant people to downgrade the name, and be prepared to correct them.

Wealth and status have nothing to do with choosing your daughters name.

Our daughter's name is unusual , and we have a mixed response .... and we adore her name.

nessus · 13/06/2009 23:12

I must be seriously out of the loop as I have never heard of the name and even with all the pointers of how to say it, still can't get my mouth around it.

What would be the point of giving my child a name that only I can pronounce

The poor child will end up answering to everything and anything but its actual name

I am all for random names but imagine your child being called hairy because schoolfriends can't say the full name. Not good, not good at all

sleepyhead3 · 14/06/2009 12:54

It's a lovely name but perhaps not workable in this country.

I know a lovely Sheherazade. She's 9. At first I did think, 'what's her name??' but it really has grown on me.

nomorecake · 14/06/2009 23:35

went to school with a shererazade.
she was gorgeous, indian, probably about 32years old now. her name suited her.
no one had a problem saying her name.

i was always a bit envious of her beautifully exotic romantic sounding name.

i dont think she had any probs spelling her name.

sherry would be a good nickname.
