Barney

Could you let me have your opinion on whether it would be cruel to name a boy Barnaby and call him Barney, considering the big purple dinosaur? This is my first baby so not sure whether Barny the dinosaur is popular enough or whatever to leap immediately to the mind of any person that hears the name Barny! Thanks!

I think of the dinosaur.
It's not a name I would chose, even if it wasn't for the existence of the Big Purple Dinosaur. Bit naff imo.

we know a baby barney, he is so cute, and from a family with lots of boys it doesn't feel wierd at all.

Picante · 20/05/2009 14:02

I know a Barney and he really suits it. I think it's lovely but wouldn't choose it myself.

sockmonster · 20/05/2009 14:03

It is more of a pet's name, like you'd have a hamster or a dog named Barney, not a child...?

WinkyWinkola · 20/05/2009 14:03

Great name.

I get annoyed when people use great names for pets/cartoon characters. Can't they just use names like Digger and Dino or Jaws or Godzilla instead of ruining great names?

bluebump · 20/05/2009 14:03

I know someone called Barnaby but he is known as Barney, I like it.

kif · 20/05/2009 14:05

the name belongs to a teddy bear.

missmiss · 20/05/2009 14:10

I love it. I teach a lovely Barney.

PortBlacksandResident · 20/05/2009 14:14

I would think Rubble.
But then i am old.

squeaver · 20/05/2009 14:19

purple dinosaur

KKKKaty · 20/05/2009 14:24

Thanks ladies - mixed reviews, so we'll have a think!

Barney just makes me think of an argument now as in having a barney

I do think its sweet for a wee one though

Themasterandmargaritas · 20/05/2009 16:19

We have a Barnaby and I just can't stand it when he is shortened to Barney. I have no logical reason why, it just sounds kind of corny to me and rubble-like. Most of his friends call him Barn.

chumbers · 20/05/2009 18:21

we loved the name barney, only put off by annoying CBBC presenter called Barney Harwood

Barney is lovely and ignore people talking about dinosaurs or cavemen... the only reason they have this association is because it is not overly common. No-one blinks at Fred do they? No mention of Flintstone or Astaire...cos it is more common.

Go for it.

goomum · 20/05/2009 20:02

Also you want to think about the associations their peers will form not their parents generation... We never blinked at Bill and Ben but our parents thought they were flowerpot men!

Paolosgirl · 20/05/2009 20:03

Purple dinosaur or the black and white dog next door - sorry.

I like Barnaby though.

hatwoman · 20/05/2009 20:03

I know a barney - he's lovely and the name has never made me think of dinosaurs or cavemen. I do think of it as of a certain type though. a bit posh (though its poshness is probably receding) and of the moment. but basically a nice name.

Tortington · 20/05/2009 20:05

burnababy

or

a big fucking dinosaur

audley · 20/05/2009 20:05

LastOrders · 20/05/2009 20:07

Would definately have it on my list if I were to have another

I know of a Barney - he's gorgeous and suits it to a T!

moodlumthehoodlum · 20/05/2009 20:08

i love it. DS was so nearly a Barnaby shortened to Barney (after my first dog, admittedly..)

SoupDragon · 20/05/2009 20:10

I hate that f-ing dinosaur.

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 20/05/2009 20:13
