Hi, do you know anyone who has named their daughter Amelie who has some regrets at not using Emily instead because of confusion when introducing/saying the name, or does the name generally cause no problems? Thanks

Lots of amelies are springing up so I would think most people wouldn't be confused by the name. Emily much nicer imo though

Know lots of Amelies its popularity will probably mean there isnt as much confusion about its spelling as you might think.

Personally much prefer Emily. I dont really understand why people use Amelie if they are not French. Isnt it the French version of Amelia?

dizzydixies · 18/05/2009 13:50

no, the Amelies I know haven't had a problem

Hulababy · 18/05/2009 13:52

I really like Amelie. Emily is a classic, pretty name too - just more popular round here.

I know a couple who told everyone their DD was called Amelie, but changed it to Emily within a fortnight for those reasons mentioned.

Personally, I think Emily is nicer when said with any kind of British accent. Amelie only sounds prettier in a French accent.

DD1 is Amelia, and I get frigged off with people saying 'Is that Emilia with an E'? so it's not just Emily/ Amelie. I'd go for Emily but that's just because I personally am from ''English'' stock and think Amelie is a fashion trend in the same way that calling your child an Irish name if you have not so much of a hint of Irishness is just a trend.

BunnyLebowski · 23/05/2009 21:39

Don't call your baby Amelie unless you are French or have a French background.

It sounds awful with English surnames and with an English accent (especially up here in yorkshire).

Emily is boring but inoffensive.

Noonki · 23/05/2009 21:52

Kotek - I know two amelie's and their parents have reported no problems.

Emily is very classic and beautiful but very 'normal'

not that it matters!

PS are you a kitten in disguise my mum's cat is a Kotek...are you Polish.. nosy!

ohdearwhatamess · 23/05/2009 21:52

I know 2 Amelies, very different in character, but the name suits both of them. Neither have French families, and neither have faced confusion, so far as I can tell.

I prefer Emily though. Don't know any here.

I like both Emily and Amelie.

Very surprised by all the comments that you need to be french to use this name. Is every one of the thousands of little Isabelle's born in the last few years Spanish or Italian? With that logic they should be called Elizabeth shouldn't they?
