Can anyone suggest names that could be shorted to Kitty besides Katherine? We'd love to use Kitty for a girl but are concerned that it may not be sufficiently formal/elegant/grown up on its own and would like her to have the choice when she's older.

Don't mind stretching it a bit, so names with a C (not even necessarily at the beginning) could work. Just something that, phonetically or otherwise, lends itself to Kitty?

Thanks in hope!

Catriona/ Katrina
Caitlin

Just thought, for instance, of Victoria - the "ict" bit (short i, k sound, and a t)perhaps makes it just tenable. Only not Victoria...

Kristen?
Kirsten?
Kathleen?
Cathryn?
Or why not just use Kitty on its own? It's not a little girl-y name like some names around. I know a grown up Kit (her name is Kristen.)

bronze · 16/05/2009 17:11

Kirsty? Kirsten etc

Kwini · 16/05/2009 17:14

Really? You don't think that, should she go on to become a judge or a lumberjack, Kitty on its own would sound a bit odd? I can imagine it perfectly for a little girl and teenager (and old lady!) but am struggling a little with the mid-life part...

Christopher can be shortened to Kit, so what about Christina or Christiana to Kitty?

FrankMustard · 16/05/2009 17:16

I know what you mean about names and age stages in life but, whilst I consider a lot of names too "little girl"y for a career woman in her 40s, I don't think Kitty woud be one of them. Maybe it's because I know a Kit and also a Kitty and that's why I don't associate it with being unsuitable becuse they're both over 35....
Do you like any of the other suggestions that have been posted or are you still stuck?

bronze · 16/05/2009 17:20

I think the career woman Kitty in brothers ans sisters works so you should be ok

BlueIsTheColour · 16/05/2009 18:23

My Aunt was Kitty all her life - she was named Kitty Eiddwen - think it is a fab name (Kitty - not so keen on the other especially as I have another aunt who is Marie Eiddwen - heaven knows what my GP's were thinking)

Kwini · 16/05/2009 18:42

Thanks for the reassurance, all!

I'm really not a fan of Christina, Kathleen, etc. (all the obvious ones) - weirdly, I've yet to find a single name beginning with K or C that I like!

So keep 'em coming peeps, if only for interest's sake! Just thought that Atticus could work ('tic' sound) - tho of course, that's a boys name

Why don't you call her something quite else (that you like obviously) and then use Kitty as a pet name? It doesn't have to be a direct diminutive.

For kit in the middle names I can only think of Nakita other than the Katherine variants, and that's terribly Elton John!

stleger · 16/05/2009 21:50

I know a professor of English called Kitty. And my neighbour's granddaughter is a Kitty too. It suits them both.

Kwini · 17/05/2009 11:04

Out of interest, do you think Kitty is becoming too popular? Would prefer the name not to be in the top 100, if poss...
