I like Shelby for a girl, what do you think of it?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Fimbo · 12/05/2009 22:59

No

littlelamb · 12/05/2009 22:59

No

Tommy · 12/05/2009 23:00

no - sorry - sounds like a word you made up

seriouscase · 12/05/2009 23:01

No. Everyone will think of Julia Roberts in that film where she dies and leaves a young child.

thisisyesterday · 12/05/2009 23:01

it has never been a fave of mine I must admit, but actually, sitting here and saying it it is kind of growing on me

tummytickler · 12/05/2009 23:03

No - I really dont like it, sounds to nicknamey and American.
I had a professor at uni called Shelby, and it always surprised me because the name and the profession just didnt seem to match

Lubyloo · 12/05/2009 23:04

Just think of Steel Magnolias

It is the town next to Springfield in The Simpsons - Shelbyville.

I would say that most children growing up now are exposed to The Simpsons and I would suspect that an awful lot over the next few years will be too (plus thise with older siblings etc) so it may be worth bearing in mind?

ninah · 12/05/2009 23:05

no

Washersaurus · 12/05/2009 23:06

It goes nicely with Furby....

tigerdriver · 12/05/2009 23:06

Shelby Lynne - great singer, dodgy name

Carroll Shelby - great car designer, er no comment on his name

nigglewiggle · 12/05/2009 23:10

Don't like it - sorry

Don't think watching the Simpsons is "sad". But what do I know!

jambutty · 12/05/2009 23:10

Like "shelby coming round the mountain"?

KingCanuteIAm · 12/05/2009 23:19

Thanks Niggle

Isn't it "She'll be"?

lunamoon2 · 12/05/2009 23:31

I know a Shelby and the name suits her. Not something I would choose but if you like it then go for it.

seeker · 12/05/2009 23:45

As far as I know it has no context, no history and no meaning. It's just a collection of letters. Why not Wilby? Or Canby, Wontby, Cantby.......

KingCanuteIAm · 12/05/2009 23:51

From Behind The Name "Though previously in use as a rare masculine name, it was popularized as a feminine name by the main character in the movie 'The Woman in Red' (1935). It was later reinforced by the movie 'Steel Magnolias' (1989) in which Julia Roberts played a character by this name"

Maybe not centuries of history but certainly some.

violethill · 13/05/2009 00:38

It sounds like a plastic doll that cries and wees itself when you turn it upside down and bash it on the head

clairebear88 · 15/05/2009 18:49

This was my fave name when I was little and used to name all my dolls either Shelby or Christy. My taste in names has changed quite a bit but there will always be a place in my heart

posieparker · 15/05/2009 18:50

Nope. I can only say it with a deep s'u'then drawl.

MadameCastafiore · 15/05/2009 19:00

Ooohhhh no I have to say it with a really screechy sarf london accent!

Is one of those names that I would cringe at if you shouted it out in Waitrose - actually it is an Asda name or maybe Morrisons and that isn't good!

dizzydixies · 15/05/2009 19:20

not keen
