Which do you prefer and why?

Hmmm. Ambrose is 'old West Indian uncle' in my world, so I'd have to say Caspar.

Greensneeze · 11/05/2009 11:18

I like Caspar but only spelt Caspar

lovely strong name

Ambrose is OK too but not to my taste personally

Poppity · 11/05/2009 11:26

Ambrose reminds me of rice pudding

Casper reminds me of the ghost

Sorry

thisisyesterday · 11/05/2009 11:35

i like Ambrose

sockmonster · 11/05/2009 16:02

Ambrose is a good enough surname, but ambrosia creamy rice etc will get tiresome. I think it's a pretty awful first name.

Casper (Caspar for more zing) is my favourite. The ghost association is at least a decade ago so I reckon most people won't really notice... it's nice and fresh.

Binkster · 11/05/2009 16:14

I absolutely love Ambrose- but DH thinks it?s too wierd. I just can?t really imagine shouting it in the supermarket, but it?s such a cool name!

screamingabdab · 11/05/2009 17:52

Ambrose is quite good

Casper - Jasper too "posh" for my taste

Thunderduck · 11/05/2009 18:55

I love both. Both are beautiful names. I think I have a slight preference for Casper though.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 11/05/2009 18:58

To me Ambrose is rather feminine...Casper is not my personal taste but OK...

Prefer ghosts to rice pudding.

pointydog · 11/05/2009 19:09

Well, I'd have to go with Caspar if that's the choice. Not so many old fuddy duddy emmerdale-type connotations

Sesi · 11/05/2009 19:13

We've chosen Ambrose so have to comment what a fab name .

I started a thread on Ambrose at the time - it didn't receive a great response, at least 80/20 against! Mainly for the rice pudding connection.

I've found it's perceived to be very Catholic, like Benedict but more so I think. Not a problem but that was one aspect of the name I hadn't really picked up on before.

loobylu3 · 11/05/2009 19:15

Love Caspar (prefer this spelling too). Actually quite like Ambrose but definitely reminds me of rice pudding so wouldn't use it!

changer22 · 11/05/2009 19:16

Ambrose is one of my favourite names. It won't work with DS's name though so it's off my list.

I used to know a Casper who was very good looking.

BikeRunSki · 11/05/2009 21:00

Ambrose, because it's my brother's name. Longstanding family name here.

boodleboot · 11/05/2009 22:24

caspar. really do not like ambrose [sorry BikeRunSki...]

Meglet · 11/05/2009 23:20

Caspar. Sounds dignified, but cool.

lazylion · 13/05/2009 16:01

My DS is called Caspar (German spelling I think). He's named after the painter Caspar David Friedrich. I love his name but everyone spells it wrong.

lunamoon2 · 13/05/2009 23:05

My friend had a cat called Ambrose so that is a no-no. Sounds feminine to me too.
On this basis alone I would have to go with casper.

stillenacht · 13/05/2009 23:11

I love Ambrose and Ballyk being back on ITV3 has reaffirmed my love of this name.

lucylocket1975 · 15/05/2009 17:58

Ambrose is lovely I think - very traditional and to me more farmer from the Archers than rice pudding! Love it

Tulia · 15/05/2009 18:01

i prefer Casper, just because it sounds more modern, Ambrose sounds a bit of an old mans name to me. i think both names are ok though

dinkymum · 15/05/2009 22:43

Casper
