Any thoughts?

Obvious question: but why not just use Nancy?

LesAnimaux · 09/05/2009 14:35

I think Agnes or Nancy - both are lovely, but would be confusing to have Nancy as a nick name.

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/05/2009 14:40

i don't understand why you would call your dd Agnes only to call her something completely different.

Jojay · 09/05/2009 14:42

I think just call her Nancy. I'm not keen on nicknames as a full name, but Nancy stands on it's own two feet perfectly well.

Not so keen on Agnes

I would just go with Nancy.

KristinaM · 09/05/2009 15:09

if i met a Nancy i would assume her formal name was Agnes

Tidey · 09/05/2009 15:11

I had no idea Nancy was a nickname. I've only ever seen it used as a name in itself.

piscesmoon · 09/05/2009 15:27

I think it will be very confusing. Historically Nancy is the nickname for Ann-I have never heard of it being the nickname for Agnes. I would just call her Nancy-I know a few and that is their full name.

RedEmma · 09/05/2009 15:30

Nancy is apparently quite a traditional nickname for Agnes (and Annis). DP loves Agnes, it's his one and only all-time favourite girl's name, always thought he'd have a daughter named Agnes etc, and although I'm not massively keen on it I don't want to take it away from him.

I do think Agnes is classic and due a revival, but I prefer Nancy - much prettier. So this is a bit of a compromise.

hmm....neither ....sorry truely not keen on either choice...

piscesmoon · 09/05/2009 15:42

Thinking about it I would say that Agnes probably comes from Ann too.

RedEmma · 09/05/2009 15:53

I think there's some disagreement over the origins of Agnes - I've heard it's related to the Greek name Hagnos (a nymph in mythology iirc) and the Latin for lamb, Agnus.

My gran was Agnes but always known as Nancy.

weepootle · 10/05/2009 16:03

...just to confirm the shortening!

ChocFridgeCake · 10/05/2009 16:10

Like both names but can't see how Nancy is a nn for Agnes, I haven't heard of it myself (although obviously others have).

Isn't Aggie or Ags the usual nn for Agnes? Just think it may be confusing, like being called Rachel but having Sarah as a nn, IYSWIM.

Then again, never could see how Peggy or Daisy were a common nn for Margaret!!

Shame you can't have Nancy Agnes, if Nancy is the name she will be called most often.

Tippychickchickchicken · 10/05/2009 16:16

I called DD Emily with the intention of a nickname/shortened version being Milly (if any).
She has been universally known as Emmie since birth, nothing I can do about it! So don't assume that your chosen nickname will be the one that is used. Aggie seems more likely to me.

RedEmma · 10/05/2009 16:22

It seems to be one of those old-fashioned nicknames that has been changed over time so it bears little relation to the orginal. There are quite a few commonly used though - Peggy, Dick, Jack, Hank. Apparently Colin is actually a nickname from Nicholas. Adding an N to make a nickname was quite common, with Nancy/Nellie/Nettie.

I'm not keen on Aggie, Nessa/Nessie might be ok, but is the Loch Ness Monster connection too strong?

Nancy is like Sadie or Polly. It is a name. I think it's quite sweet. Prefer Annie though, but if you like it, use it. why not. Not a fan of Agnes. I like the French pronounciation but AGnuss how we say it, not great.

nancy75 · 10/05/2009 20:33

my name is nancy and nobody has ever asked if its short for agnes, i cant really see the connection tbh.

Andthentherewerethree · 10/05/2009 20:36

my dd's middle name is agnes, named after my grandma who was vera agnes. have never heard of nancy as a nn for it though.

belgo · 10/05/2009 20:37

Yes just call her Nancy. I think Nancy is originally a form of Anne?

PacificDogwood · 10/05/2009 20:38

Women called Agnes here (Scotland) are often known as Senga (Agnes backwards, geddit, geddit?) which I just detest!!
Never heard of Nancy being a nickname for Agnes but if you like Nancy and your husband could live with it, then why not go for that?

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 10/05/2009 20:43

Funny I was going to say in Scotland everyone I know called Nancy day to day their "actual" name is Agnes.
I have heard the Senga variation also but usually in Glasgow/west coast kind of area.
