Too crusty?

DH and I are expecting. Not sure yet the sex, so have short list of names and would love your opinions. We like traditional names, non-biblical, strong, and not so popular--but we worry about saddling the wee thing with a name that's crusty...

One more thing: Boys will get DH's last name, girls get mine. Mine is common English last name, plain and safe. DH's last name has teasing potential (a slightly imaginative 10-year old boy will hear "poo"), so need to avoid names that might amplify that (please, no Harry Poo!).

Here we go, and many thanks for your frank opinions

Boys:
Angus
Conrad
Edgar
George

Girls:
Agnes
Eleanor
Louise
Georgia

Not crusty enough I would say! I think that your girls names might need crusting up a bit if your last name is plain as they are quite safe names too. Apart from Agnes.

MrsKitty · 07/05/2009 07:29

Boys:
Am loving Angus & Edgar (and they're both on my shortlist too!) George is OK but don't like Conrad

Girls:
Agnes is a great name - other are all a bit plain though.

sophieandbelly · 07/05/2009 07:59

hiya, iam sorry dont like any of the boys names.
girls i like eleanor, but prefere elena without the or sound, bit prettier with an a

nannyogg · 07/05/2009 08:04

I like all the boys names.

Eleanor, Louise and Georgia are quite normal, I think..

Agnes is fab. Wish I'd thought of it when naming DD, although I can bet DH would have objected.

Can you just define crusty though, bit confused about that...?

MrsMills · 07/05/2009 08:12

I love all of those names, esp. Angus, and Agnes.

Makes a nice change to see a list I really like

OrmIrian · 07/05/2009 08:20

Ahhh... when I saw 'crusty' I thought eco-warriors and dogs on string! Maybe Summer, Warty, Dragon...things like that.

Personally I love Eleanor (tis my DD) and I don't think it's plain at all . But Agnes is my next favourite.

Boys - Like edgar and George.

southeastastra · 07/05/2009 08:24

i was thinking along the swampy line too.

dragon oooohhhh

nannyogg · 07/05/2009 08:28

That's what I thought Orm, was expecting Rainbows and Skys and the like...

Eleanor is lovely, was actually my DDs name for a couple of hours after she was born - but we changed our minds, she ended up with Rhiannon - a bit on the crusty side itself..!

bodiddly · 07/05/2009 08:29

Edgar would remind me of Edgar Allan Poe

mollyroger · 07/05/2009 08:31

Edgar, George, Angus

Love Agnes,

The other girls names are pretty but so popular now. You can't turn round without trippng over Ellies, Louises and Georgias!

sleeplessinstretford · 07/05/2009 08:54

agnes is great,my niece (who is spanish and lives in spain) is called Ines (which is spanish for agnes-we call her aggy for short)
love all the boys (except conrad) and your ggirls list bar agnes and eleanor are v common/safe

RachieB · 07/05/2009 09:28

I like Conrad & Georgia best

not keen on the others
Louise eg, is a bit plain for my liking but Eloise is pretty

loobylu3 · 07/05/2009 12:48

Those aren't crusty at all- most of them are lovely!
Esp like Agnes and Eleanor from the girls list and George from the boy's list.

sockmonster · 07/05/2009 16:16

I like-

George from boy's list. Conrad is OK as well. Angus, for some unknown reason, makes me think of cows. And the ex-presenter of have I got news for you.

Edgar 'Poo' is not a good name!

Right, girls- I love Georgia. I prefer Louisa to Louise. I much prefer Ines to Agnes (much prettier imo and not jumping on the agyness deyn ridiculousness), and I like Eleanor or Elena.

Order of preference- Ines, Georgia, Louisa, Eleanor. And for boys no.1 is George.
Please, no to Angus.

sockmonster · 07/05/2009 16:18

PS Eloise also nice. Not Louise, not old enough yet to deserve a revival and not classic enough to have sufficient baby naming style. Go for Louisa

All subjective of course

KAEKAE · 07/05/2009 16:22

I know this is really childish but Angus reminds me of anus for some reason!

As with other posters I also think your names are very "safe" and quite plain. I like Eleanor, prefer it prenounced Elena.

MadameCastafiore · 07/05/2009 16:25

Boys:
Angus - nice
Conrad - yuck
Edgar - double yuck
George - nice but common

Girls:
Agnes - harsh (aggie!)
Eleanor - nice but common
Louise - bit nothingy
Georgia - yuck

by common I mean there are many not chavtastic IYKWIM.

MrsMattie · 07/05/2009 16:56

Not keen on your boy's names, I'm afraid. At a push, Conrad, as Con is quite a cool nickname.

Also not keen on your girl's names at all (sorry). I think Louisa is a lovely name, but Louise sounds flat and very 70s.

noddyholder · 07/05/2009 16:59

Edgar is my middle name I love it obviously! For a girl Agnes is lovely

TheFallenMadonna · 07/05/2009 17:11

I like Angus. And Louisa.

BottySpottom · 07/05/2009 20:21

Boys:
Angus - nice
Conrad - not sure
Edgar - not sure
George - nice

Girls:
Agnes - not sure
Eleanor - Ok, but never like it personally due to associations with someone
Louise - nicer with 'a' at the end
Georgia - nice

I don't think they are remotely these days.

xiaosansan · 08/05/2009 04:07

Thanks all for your replies: Angus AKA Anus "Poo" had never crossed my mind, but would be a terrible thing for a little boy with mean classmates.

I'm not from the UK, so interesting to hear that names like Eleanor are common. Where I live, girls typically get names like Madison or MacKenzie, boys are Aiden and Jayden. Georgia would be considered WAAAY out of left field!!

By crusty, I sort of meant "old" (even stale to certain ears); my DS is Arthur--old fashioned, but not egregious. Too crusty for me would be Wibur, Elmer, or Orville...

Looks like Agnes is the fav here by far

Any thoughts on:

Boys:
Roderick
Alfred

Girls:
Gladys
Frances

Thanks again all who have weighed in

OP posts:
MrsKitty · 08/05/2009 07:15

Alfred great - and lots of possible shortenings too. Don't like your other new suggestions at all though (sorry )

Given that you're not from the UK and you say that Eleanor/Georgia/George are not at all popular/common I'm be tempted to reconsider my 'girl' vote and go for Eleanor!

pandavark · 08/05/2009 15:10

i think theyre all nice

staylucky · 08/05/2009 16:48

I'm proper gutted that my name's a bit nothingy! (louise)

I've never met anyone through school or work with the same name and have always loved being a Lou.

I love love love George x
