What do you guys think of Evelyn as a name? I love evie as a baby name and think evelyn works as a grown up name too. edging to top of the list am i deluded?
Also i would automatically pronounce it eve-lyn not ev-lyn prefer the first pronunciation what do you think majority would assume?

I would assume ev-e-lin

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 03/05/2009 09:31

I think that usually ev-e-lin or ev-lyn is the pronounciation for a first name and eve-lyn is the pronounciation for a surname

I am probably wrong but thats what I have always heard, been told, thought

trixiechick · 03/05/2009 09:31

hmmm new dilemma, hadn't even considered it might be pronounced ev-e-lin. not too fond of that pronunciation......

my great-aunts was pronounced Eve-lyn.

isn't Ev-lyn the make version?

lovely name BTW

PistachioLemon · 03/05/2009 09:34

I think it's quite pretty, but then I also like the French pronunciation of Eve.

The2ndMrsSantosneeGissabreak · 03/05/2009 09:40

It's one of our dd's middle names and I have never even considered it . Both sound fine - go with whichever you prefer/can imagine yourself shouting in Lidl/Waitrose

lalalonglegs · 03/05/2009 10:09

It's pronounced Eve-lyn. Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also called Evelyn and they used to be known as Shevelyn and Hevelyn so, imo, they are pronounced the same regardless of gender.

My grandmother was Evelyn and it was pn Ev-lyn. It's one of those where you can choose....Eve-lyn sounds posher I think.

sophieandbelly · 04/05/2009 11:18

my best mates daughter is maeve-eveline.... the eveline is pronounced eve-lyn. my daughter is evie so obviously think that is very cute!!!

lotspot · 04/05/2009 11:31

I automatically think ev-e-lyn, but never havin met one i wouldn't know if this was standard or not

I prefer it as ev-e-lyn

belgo · 04/05/2009 11:36

I thought Ev-e-lyn as well.

You don't need a grown up name. Evie is fine for an adult.

Sibh · 04/05/2009 11:39

Here in Ireland it's always Ev-lin.

That's a bit spooky about you friend Sophie as my dd's are Maebh and Eibhlín. If she has a boy she might really like the name Fintan

We don't shorten DD2's name, but she sometimes gets called Evelina or EvlinDevlin or (by DD1) EvlyDev ...

Sibh · 04/05/2009 11:40

dd's names [

sophieandbelly · 04/05/2009 16:49

really sibh that is odd! i dont know anyone else with maeve! very pretty both names tho! xx

jellybeans · 04/05/2009 21:35

eve-lyn

diedandgonetodevon · 04/05/2009 21:42

Eve-lyn. Would assume Ev-lyn was a male.

triggerhappybaby · 19/05/2009 16:58

I'm going to go with my grandmother's middle name if I have a girl - Eveline, pronounced Ev-e-line, and Evie for short

Fimbo · 19/05/2009 17:00

It's pronounced Ev-lin in Scotland. Do some people not pronounce it with an "r" in it too?

oysterpots · 20/05/2009 10:20

Evelyn Waugh was definitely pronounced 'Everlyn' so maybe that's the way for the male version.

Bit of a pain having a name that can so easily be mis-pronounced... I would go with Eve as formal name, Evie as nickname. Lovely!

Weegiemum · 20/05/2009 10:43

I know an Eveline (in Scotland) pronounced Eev-lin. She calls herself Evie, though (and she's a grown-up).
