Come and agree with me that we cannot give a girl this name!

Obviously it's early days yet as I've only just discovered I'm pregnant. But dh said to me this evening that if we have another girl he wants to call her Laodike! (pronounced La-oh-DEE-kee).

No no no no no no no!

Laodike makes me think of spudulike.

Love Hero, though. DD would have been called that if DH was not so conservative.

pasturesnew · 29/04/2009 21:06

I like Helen!

Dragonrider · 29/04/2009 21:08

Sorry but I would read that as Loa (like Mao) - dike which doesn't exactly sound very nice. When it's said properly it sounds nicer, but she would be forever correcting people.

Heated · 29/04/2009 21:09

Lay a dyke - he's pulling your leg, isn't he?

alexpolismum · 29/04/2009 21:10

Helen is indeed very nice, but it's my niece's name.

Phoebe - Greek and very pretty

alexpolismum · 29/04/2009 21:12

Heated - the real pronunciation is Lah-oh-dee-kee. I can honestly say the dyke thing never occurred to me until I saw it posted here. Maybe it's just me being dim!

I would have pronounced it lay a dyke. Its going to be the first thing she gets called at high school and it will NEVER be forgotten

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 29/04/2009 21:15

as everyone has said, very unfair to saddle her with a name that is difficult for english speakers to pronounce correctly as we read it as lay o dike, and also therefore open to mockery and ridicule in the playground.

if your dh is not convinced, show him this thread. or ask a group of 9 year old boys about it and see if he would like his daughter being known as the dyke layer!

alexpolismum · 29/04/2009 21:15

DH says schoolchildren are far too innocent to think of dyke!

He likes Phaedra, though!

(I bet it will turn out to be a boy after all this!)

OP posts:
gigglinggoblin · 29/04/2009 21:17

Is she only going to keep it while she is at school then?

gigglinggoblin · 29/04/2009 21:18

Sorry I shouldnt post so many times on one thread, it isnt that bad!

georgimama · 29/04/2009 21:27

No, children are not too innocent to think of dyke. Children have older silbings (lots do anyway), for one thing.

Mummyfor3 · 29/04/2009 21:40

Would Electra be an acceptable alternative?

g4grapes · 29/04/2009 21:47

Don't want to dampened any enthusiasm for Electra, but isn't there a Freudian complex named after her? Its a bit like the Oedipus Compex (a boy lusting after his mother) but obviously the genders are different.

I am thinking of the phone calls where the person says "How do you spell that?" every single time! I have to ensure both my first and surnames are spelt correctly, and even my maiden name was unusual, so from my point of view, give children names that "society" knows how to spell!!

thell · 29/04/2009 21:54

Hera is also quite pretty I think...?

ravenAK · 29/04/2009 21:57

i think being a Trojan princess pretty much guaranteed coming to a sticky end in the Iliad!

You could have Cassandra or Polyxenia - same objection but easier to pronounce...

Or Iphigenia, Clytemnestra etc from the other side (still grim stories though).

thedolly · 29/04/2009 22:09

Do re mi fa so La-oh-dee-kee-do

Heated · 29/04/2009 22:14

I confess, I was being deliberately perverse but it's only a few syllables out and I can guarantee that a name ending in 'dike' or even 'dicky', with additionally the word 'lao' in it, will come in for teasing/bullying, especially at secondary school. Some ppl give their children names that make them/break them (I know a Gypsey) & Laodike could fall into that category I fear.

Given you describe dh's naming choices as 'conservative', are you sure he isn't pulling your leg?

SK1980 · 29/04/2009 23:54

Georgiana, that's a pretty name. Anything with potential 'dick' and 'dyke' connotations is surely a no go?

Nekabu · 30/04/2009 09:30

Calling a girl a name with 'dike' in it is asking for the poor thing to endure rather a lot, especially if it starts with lay ...

There are lots of nice Greek names, just check the story behind them first though!

dizzydixies · 30/04/2009 09:33

you're right, tis wrong what about Althea or Juno

MadameCastafiore · 30/04/2009 09:35

fishie · 30/04/2009 09:44

what is it about men and classical names? dh wanted to call ds calliope and my dad had me down as an ephigenia.

Cosmosis · 30/04/2009 10:08

I actually think the pronunciation is really pretty, but written it doesn't look great I ahve to say.
