Unisex

Didn't mean to be snide, Littlfish - but seeker often seems to express the same opinion, whether or not it has been solicited, and in a manner which I find unpleasant and unnecessary. No one posts these threads seeking permission to use a name, and we don't owe it to someone on an internet forum not to choose a name that he/she disapproves of!

FWIW, I like Wren.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2009 19:41

I'm with Seeker.

Actually, I wouldn't use it as a name at all, although it is DD's nickname.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2009 19:42

FFS, there was nothing unpleasant about how Seeker expressed her opinion.

Greensleeves · 29/04/2009 19:44

I disagree Soupy [huzzah!!!)

I can see Kwini's point - it is a bit annoying when somebody posts "PLEASE don't call your child xxx/wean your child at xxx weeks/let your child eat rollmops etc. It's not an appropriate response.

but I'm sure seeker didn't mean to be condescending

DontCallMeBaby · 29/04/2009 19:46

Girls' name. I know two!

Greensleeves · 29/04/2009 19:47

Actually now I come to think of it I do know a female Wren, short for Kerenza but she's always called Wren

differentID · 29/04/2009 19:47

girl- even if only for the connection to the Naval term WREN.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2009 19:48

I disagree Greeny [relief] . It would have been unpleasant had she said "If you call your boy Wren you may as well start bullying him now and save time"

Greensleeves · 29/04/2009 19:49

Ah, I agree [gulp] it wasn't unpleasant, but it was annoying and inappropriate. IMVHO.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2009 19:49

I have a female Wren gallumphing around like an elephant upstairs. She's meant to be asleep

SoupDragon · 29/04/2009 19:50

I think it's rude to say a blunt "don't do X" but the please makes it more of a plea.

Greensleeves · 29/04/2009 19:51

I think the please is inappropriately emotional and a bit weird, and pushy

Kwini · 29/04/2009 19:54

That's exactly it, Greensleeves - you summed up my feelings entirely

It's a surname.

BeckhamSpice · 29/04/2009 20:12

Useless Fact: L'wren Scott changed her name for posh points.
Don't think Luann has the same ring to it.

seeker · 29/04/2009 20:19

Do I have to pay for all this stylistic and character analysis or is it free?

Greensleeves · 29/04/2009 20:20

floral tributes to be left at the door please seeker

SoupDragon · 29/04/2009 21:13

There's nothing about it if you've had experience of a stupid an unusual name.

[bitter]

Kwini · 29/04/2009 21:27

I have a very unusual name - one which you may well consider "stupid", SoupDragon - and love it...so I don't think one can legislate for these things, really.

seeker · 29/04/2009 21:31

Well, you're very lucky, Kwini - a lot of other people do not share your experience. And I feel it is unfair to give a child a name which may be a burden - or even which may make their life a bit more difficult that it needs to be. There are so many factors in your child's life you can't do anything about. You CAN decide not to send a boy to secondary school called Wren!

Kwini · 29/04/2009 21:37

Yup - let's call everyone Sue and Bob. And if someone suggests something slightly different, let's desperately plead with them to choose something more sensible, because we're the only ones with their child's best interest at heart...

Sigh. I think we've been here before.

nkf · 29/04/2009 21:38

It's the name of a bird.

seeker · 29/04/2009 21:48

There is a huge difference between unusual names and names which invite judgement and covert laughter. Nobody is suggesting that everyone should be called John or Mary - certainly what I am suggesting is that people should think very seriously about the fact that they are not naming just a baby - they are naming a shy lumpen teenager, a professional adult and an old person as well/

Unusual is fine - bonkers is not!
