Layla or Milly for a girl?

Hi, we don't know what flavour DC2 is yet but are thinking of names. Still stuck on boys names (any suggestions would be fab) but we really like Layla and Milly for a girl. Just wondering what the mumsnet folks thought of those names? Our surname starts with 'Mc'.

DS is called Jamie (officially James but is never called that) so do you think these names would 'go' with Jamie OK?

Please feel free to offer any other names for consideration too!

You have to be careful with Layla as it can sound awful said by people who don't pronounce their words properly!

Hi, I love the name Milly, prefer it to Layla. My son is called Toby so I love that name. Millicent is also a lovely name to shorten to Milly.

CandleQueen · 27/04/2009 15:15

Don't like either, but that's just my preference. You probably wouldn't like my name choices either...
Too many Milly's around here and Layla sounds a bit common.

Maggie sounds nice with a "Mc" surname

ilikeyoursleeves · 27/04/2009 15:19

Yes we expect DC to be dark-ish as we both have dark brown hair and I have olive skin (mixed race) so I thought that the meaning of Layla would be appropriate! Apparantly it also means 'born in the night' so we could see what time 'she' pops out at LOL.

I know a Lyla and I always get confused whether it's Lyla or Layla. We have also liked Lola for ages (DH is the worlds biggest Kinks fan) but in the days of Charlie and Lola do you think that would be crazy to go down that road?

candlequeen DC's auntie is called Maggie, so wouldn't call baby that in case of offence to other siblings!

I'm afraid that Layla is too way out for me - does not pass the hairdresser /pilot / surgeon test.

I love Milly, but would give her a more formal name so that she had the choice later on. Millicent, Margaret, Camilla and Matilda would all shorten to Milly and are all fab.

CandleQueen · 27/04/2009 15:21

The Kink's Lola is a transvestite!! Not really the best icon to name your daughter after!!!

ilikeyoursleeves · 27/04/2009 15:23

Oh I didn't realise that's what the song 'Lola' was about!!!

Can't find a link because I'm at work (and almost everything is filtered - but not MN strangely!) but if you listen carefully to the lyrics you might be put off Layla!!

ilikeyoursleeves · 27/04/2009 15:25

Yes I think giving a more formal name for the birth certificate might be good but I don't really like Millicent, Camilla and Matilda, seem to 'old' IYKWIM. Though I do like Emily and Amily (not sure how that one is spelled...).

Jojay · 27/04/2009 15:27

Layla much nicer

em22 · 27/04/2009 15:28

Im an Emily so its a great name and suits all ages also like Amelie

ilikeyoursleeves · 27/04/2009 15:29

Aha, that's how it's spelled, I knew 'Amily' didn't look right

OP posts:
em22 · 27/04/2009 15:30

My friend is called amelie and she has to keep repeating herself as people think she has said emily or over the phone it can be a pain, its unusual though and not popular

TigersChick · 27/04/2009 15:31

Lola is getting to be rather popular ATM - not sure if that would bother you tho.
Everyone thinks of the Barry Manilow song but I always think of the Kinks one ...

To answer your OP - I prefer Layla as Milly is very popular, tho I do like the idea of Romily shortened to Milly ... I also love the Eric Clapton song Layla.

missorinoco · 27/04/2009 15:31

i like both (unhelpful, sorry).
what is the hairdresser /pilot / surgeon test?

smurfgirl · 27/04/2009 15:33

I like Layla.

I don't (personally!) like the sound of an m first name with an m surname. I have one and I love the name Milly but its a no go for me because of that.

Layla is lovely.

RachieB · 27/04/2009 15:52

Millie Mc something will sound weird IMO!
so for that reason i vote for Layla

MadameCastafiore · 27/04/2009 15:58

Lola is a hookers name!

sybilfaulty · 27/04/2009 19:56

Miss O - will your name take you anywhere in life? In other words, whatever career you end up doing, will your name fit?

"hello, I'm Layla Jones and I'll be cutting your hair today...."

"Dr Layla Jones will be performing your rhinoplasty today...."

"Good afternoon Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain, Layla Jones, speaking on this BA 123 flight to Rome...."

If it doesn't fit all 3, in my book it's a no no.

dinkymum · 27/04/2009 21:11

I have a Millie and Millie's are great!

Tortington · 27/04/2009 21:13

i don't dislike them, but they are really common in the same way that 'gary' was in the 70s

MammaPiggy · 27/04/2009 21:32

i like Layla and Milly but i agree that Milly with a 'm' surname might not be brilliant, so therefore prefer Layla and i like the meaning of Layla.

i think it sounds lovely with Jamie (which is actually one of my favourite boys names - i think you have very good taste!)

for boys names these are my suggestions:

Lewis
Connor
George
Charlie

hope that helps!

dustyteddy · 27/04/2009 21:37

I like layla. My dd is spelt leila, as it is closer to the Arabic spelling and my dh is from the middle east.

FrankMustard · 27/04/2009 21:39

There are a number of Millys about these days and it's sweet but I'm not sure if it's a name to have if you become a successful career woman in your 40s...iykwim - sounds a bit little girl-y
Hard choosing names that will suit all stages and ages of life.....
