No No No No!! Why?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thrifty · 25/04/2009 15:59

isn't Diarmuid a good old Irish name? There's a gardener on the Telly with the same name pronounced Durmut.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 25/04/2009 16:00

Diarmuid is an old and very popular Irish name.

DuffyFluckling · 25/04/2009 16:04

How is it pronounced?

lalalonglegs · 25/04/2009 16:15

It's pronounced Dermot - I have no idea why someone would think it was a weird name unless they had never met any Irish people or heard of the garden designer Diarmuid Gavin - sure there must be other famous Diarmuids too.

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 25/04/2009 16:16

Kinda like Dermott but with an Irish accent. Thrifty prob has it best Durmut

FAQinglovely · 25/04/2009 16:16

good solid Irish lads name that is.

Sparkler · 25/04/2009 16:19

It's not the Christian name I have trouble with it's the fact that people choose to put a Christian name with a surname that works the same as this one does!

LadyOfWaffle · 25/04/2009 16:19

I love that name! Just not that common over here

BeehiveBaby · 25/04/2009 16:21

It is a nice name, but surely you think about how a name works visually as well as how it sounds? I think it is funny too anyway.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 25/04/2009 16:47

Well if the person in question is in his 20s then his parents were very likely not aware of the potential for comic confusion with cheap cider.

nellynaemates · 25/04/2009 16:49

Em, I think you're overreacting a tad. You would pronounce it sort of Dermid White, sounds nothing like Diamond White.

FAQinglovely · 25/04/2009 16:50

very true LGP - Diamond White launched in 1986 so may not have been a "household" name when the bloke was named.

suwoo · 25/04/2009 16:55

Well I found it funny Dis . I spent many an evening under the influence of Diamond White and his sister Diamond Blush

Disenchanted3 · 25/04/2009 17:47

Jesus, calm down, I know how its pronounced and I know its an irish name.

But the way it looks with the surname White ... It just made me chuckle.

I'm not laughting at the parents either or asking 'why' it jusdt looks unfortunate when reading rather than saying.

Oh, I see. I didn't get why it was funny at all at first. No funnier than someone being called Johnnie Walker, imho.

Disenchanted3 · 25/04/2009 19:58

I think its funny!! lmao! Some of you lot need to lighten up! I find it odd how some people let posts get to them so much they let off such steam! Oh dear!

bronze · 07/05/2009 16:17

took me till Nellys post before I could work out why the op thought it was odd

MrsMattie · 07/05/2009 16:59

lol! Diarmuid is the original Gaelic version of Dermott. Deermut is probably the best way I can explain pronunciation.

Unfortunate name, though. DH used to have a colleague with a daughter called Tia-Maria. I kid you not.

RachieB · 07/05/2009 17:06

lol!

PortBlacksandResident · 07/05/2009 17:06

I don't think it's funny. I called my DD Stella and our surname is Artwaar - the teasing she gets is terrible.
