Pronounced the same way as Penelope. It was the name of Florence Nightingale's sister I've just watched the programme about her and spotted it there.
I think I really like it and although I like Penelope there are so many in my neck of the woods.

Please give honest opinions
thanks

Hmm
Sidge · 25/04/2009 15:17

It's bonkers.

ellingwoman · 25/04/2009 15:21

And why do you think it's never been heard of since?

FAQinglovely · 25/04/2009 15:23

" The name of a siren who, in desperation at not seducing Ulysses with her voice, threw herself into the sea and died. Her body washed up on the shores of Naples; the Italian city, therefore, is sometimes referred to by the name of the lost siren"

hmmm - nice

So its pronounced Parth en o pee? Sounds a bit like you have a lisp when saying it.

It sounds like a boys name and I most people think its pronounced parth en ope.

The meaning is off putting so big fat no from me.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 25/04/2009 15:27

It's certainly unusual but if you like it, go for it!

I do think it's a bit odd that so many people think that everyone must choose from this little pool of 'acceptable' names, when there are so many unused or forgotten names to choose from.

troutpout · 25/04/2009 15:27

No

foxinsocks · 25/04/2009 15:28

nope

Thunderduck · 25/04/2009 15:36

No.It's awful.

Bonneville · 25/04/2009 15:53

If its pronounced the same way as Penelope AND there are so many Penelopes in your neck of the woods then why on earth would you want it anyway?

MrsMattie · 25/04/2009 15:56

Horrible. Penelope is nice, though.

DuffyFluckling · 25/04/2009 16:02

I like it.

I really dislike it.

Gunnerbean · 25/04/2009 19:38

Isn't the Parthenope in Athens?

BeehiveBaby · 25/04/2009 19:39

You what?

JulesJules · 25/04/2009 19:41

I think Penelope is better. Calliope or Persephone could be alternatives?

PuppyMonkey · 25/04/2009 19:42

Don't.

Not.

Ever.

FAQinglovely · 25/04/2009 19:46

Gunner - no Parthenope comes from Greek Mythology, but she came crashing down and was washed up near Naples which is in Italy..........but Naples was called Parthenope by the Greeks........who built it

dustbuster · 25/04/2009 21:05

It sounds a bit like "parp" - sorry.

dustbuster · 25/04/2009 21:06

In fact it sounds a bit like "parp and a pee" - a bit teaseworthy. Sorry, it's horrible when you have a name you love and everyone rubbishes it.

princessmel · 25/04/2009 21:09

It sounds like an ailment you wouldn't want to have.
