Felicity is becoming Chav? Surely not?

Felicity has been on my shortlist for some time. When mentioned to friends two of them have mentioned it is becoming more down market, I've also read the comment online.

Any thoughts? Is there any truth in it?

Never heard this but then, haven't discussed Felicity with anyone before. Sounds middle class to me perhaps because of Felicity Kendal (and all the Felicities I've ever met).

Lovely meaning, if you like it then I wouldn't let daft comments put you off. Unless you find it's really popular on those mad baby naming sites. Someone linked to The Sun earlier, have a nosy on there!

cornishwelk · 25/04/2009 13:59

That's what I thought, Felicity Kendal is the only one I've heard of.
I wondered if there must be something in it for it to have come up a few times.

Not chav imo
They would have to learn to spell it first

MsMargotBeauregarde · 25/04/2009 14:01

I think that like Lucy it#s become a little more mainstream than it once was, but definitely not 'chav'. Just not as eye-wateringly posh as it once was.

Totally different from being the c word.

ilovesprouts · 25/04/2009 14:16

no its not chavvy imo

Sorrento · 25/04/2009 15:17

I think it's a case of anything that they think sounds posh, George, Sophie etc has slid down that slippery slope.
Felicity isn't one I've come across although, maybe it's escaped.

suwoo · 25/04/2009 15:36

I can't believe Felicity could ever become chavvy . Its a lovely name.

surreylady · 25/04/2009 15:57

No

pandavark · 25/04/2009 20:26

dont know why you'd want to sound posh anyway. its better if it doesnt sound stuck up

pranma · 25/04/2009 22:20

Its a really lovely name and I havent heard of any little ones with that name

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 25/04/2009 22:21

I don't know a single Felicity - chav or otherwise. It's a lovely name, go for it.

itfcbabe · 26/04/2009 10:26

i knew 1 felicity and she was posh

personally i don't like the name, at least there won't be many other girls with her name at school

duchesse · 26/04/2009 10:41

My 14 yr old daughter isn't like you say and she's a Felicity.

noddyholder · 26/04/2009 10:42

I think it is a lovely name. Wouldn't describe it as Chav at all.

RachieB · 27/04/2009 13:04

Don't think its chavvy
certainly not here

i only know of one (teenage) one

not keen myself, but def not chavvy

ForeverOptimistic · 27/04/2009 13:13

It certainly isn't "chavvy".

Perhaps it is becoming more mainstream. I don't know of any young Felicitys but it has been debated on MN a few times so perhaps it will soon be back in fashion.

I actually get really irked when people claim that names are "chavvy" just because the name is no longer "owned" by the upper classes. My favourite name at the moment is Matilda but apparantly it is considered "chav" by some Mumsnetters because someone once spotted a Matilda in Asda drinking a fruitshoot.

jumpingbeans · 27/04/2009 13:14

meow - littlelamb

jumpingbeans · 27/04/2009 13:16

lmao Filicity = chav, where are the bloody deed poll forms

bratnav · 27/04/2009 13:19

Felicity and Penelope were the 2 girls names I couldn't choose between this time round. We found out on Friday that we are having a boy, so they are off the list

Definitely not chavvy IMHO.

SouthernMeerkat · 27/04/2009 18:57

Forever Optimistic - I agree with you re Matilda NOT being chavvy - don't MNers know that "upper class girls' names always end in 'a'"

We have a Matilda/Tilly - perhaps all MNers mean that it sounds rather too 'normal'. We can't all have DCs called Tarquin, Persephone and Wolf.....

SouthernMeerkat · 27/04/2009 19:00

Oh, and to Cornishwelk, I loved the name Felicity - I was at prep school with one and secondary with another one, both very smart 'gels' and so I would argue vehmently against the 'chav' label. DH wasn't sure about it, but in the end we had a second boy so didn't have to fight discuss it.

SamJamsmum · 27/04/2009 19:05

Not remotely chav.
