What would you think if you heard this name?
I'm thinking nickname Sephy.
Do you know how to pronounce it? very important as it could be a problem.

ridingjoker · 21/04/2009 16:54

percy's on the phone??

MadreInglese · 21/04/2009 16:55

hmmmm.... goddess of fertility

fine if she wants loads of kids herself I guess!

LastOrders · 21/04/2009 16:58

Ummmmmmm, no.

If you don't really know how to pronounce it, and I sure as hell don't, then its gonna be one confusing time for the DC!

LastOrders · 21/04/2009 16:59

Why not just use the name Seph?

Though I'm guessing its for a girl.

FatGirlThin · 21/04/2009 17:00

It's ancient greek pronounced purr sef own ee.

Sorry but unless you're greek it just sounds pretentious.

LaDiDaDi · 21/04/2009 17:01

I know how to pronounce it, not sure if I like it.

To me it sounds like a muddle of Stephanie and Penelope although I know that's it actually the name of a goddess.

MadreInglese · 21/04/2009 17:03

I would imagine most people will not have heard of it and will pronounce it Percy-Phone

If you can be arsed to correct people all the time then go for it

dalek · 21/04/2009 17:05

I think it's a beautiful name and it would have been DD's name f DH hadn't vetoed it.

If people can't pronounce it they can learn

LilyBolero · 21/04/2009 17:06

I prefer Penelope.

luffharbour · 21/04/2009 17:09

I know how to pronounce it I just wondered if many people thought it was pronounced Percy phone.
i'm not Greek, but lots of people use popular names not from their country of origin.

It will getted pronounced Percy phone. I only know how to pronounce it because I've seen it on mumsnet.

JRocks · 21/04/2009 17:25

I know of one little girl called Persephone, Seph is what she is known as by the family.

yappybluedog · 21/04/2009 17:27

Sephy is nice

charitygirl · 21/04/2009 18:11

I know a Persephone in her 20s, nicknamed Sephy - I think it's lovely,

And 'Percyphone' could be a family/friends joke, iykwim.

ShowOfHands · 21/04/2009 18:13

I like it. I would be surprised if people mispronounced it as often as people think on here. And the people that matter only have to learn once.

Sephy's lovely too. What about Seraphina?

tummytickler · 21/04/2009 19:45

I love this name - i wanted to call a dd2 this and she was refered to as Percy for most of the pregnancy, but when she was born she looked like a Pearl.
I love the mythology behind it - it is a beautiful story, it is a beautiful name with cute nn, i often wish i had used it!
Beautiful!

MadamAnt · 21/04/2009 19:50

This was our No1 name for DC3 if she'd been a girl (just found out it's a boy!), with Percy as our nickname. It's a fantastic name IMO.

tummytickler - funnily enough the middle name was going to be Pearl. You clearly have excellent taste.

Poppity · 21/04/2009 20:04

Lovely name- still on my list if we have another dd!

blouseenthusiast · 21/04/2009 20:13

It has some quite dark associations - she tarvels to the land of teh dead or something and is bringer of darkness (struggles to remember myths) but not v cheery...

hf128219 · 21/04/2009 20:17

Only if you are very posh!

branchofreason · 21/04/2009 20:28

I agree with hf

Poppity · 21/04/2009 20:28

Yes that's right, the god of the underworld falls in love with her and she has to live down there for part of the year. I think spring is when she returns- something to do with her mother?

mileniwmffalcon · 21/04/2009 20:34

sephy will get constantly mis-heard as sophie, guarantee it.
