Hi
Yes i know Phyllis rhymes with syphilis, but aside from that?
I loved this name as a child and think i am liking it again, (in fact i am falling madly in love with it - now i want twins called Jean and Phyllis!).
I thinnk Pip is quite cute nn - dh not so sure - what do you think.
What would you use for a middle name?
it is puzzling me - nothing sounds quite right.

It's my aunt's name -- she's known as Phyl. My sister (sort-of named after her) is Phil short for Philippa instead.

newgirl · 21/04/2009 11:02

i think it truly lovely and i had not thought of syphilis until you pointed it out!

pippa if you not sure?

vess · 21/04/2009 11:09

Like it!

jellybeans · 21/04/2009 13:41

don't like at all, old lady name.

midnightexpress · 21/04/2009 13:42

yuk

crumpet · 21/04/2009 13:54

I actually rather like it. Wasn't oneof the R|ailway Children a Phyllis?

blametheparents · 21/04/2009 13:55

Not keen, would be a no from me

troutpout · 21/04/2009 14:06

It was my aunts name
I really like it
Also like Iris and Jean
My Aunt was always shortened to Phyl (like that too!)

belgo · 21/04/2009 14:10

I read The Kraken Wakes as a child and thought Phyllis to be such a cool name.

logsonmahire · 21/04/2009 15:24

It doesn't just rhyme with Syphilis, that's the problem, it is the latter part of Sy - Philis.
It would be setting up for teasing, don't do it.

Thunderduck · 21/04/2009 16:31

No. It's awful.

Pinkjenny · 21/04/2009 16:32

It reminds me of the woman who used to be in Coronation Street with the purple hair.

LaDiDaDi · 21/04/2009 16:33

I really don't like it.

TsarChasm · 21/04/2009 16:38

Pinkjenny - that's who I thought of! Why do some old ladies have such strange coloured hair??

Sorry it's a no fom me. Phyllida instead maybe? Or is that too much like the cheese spread?

giltedger · 21/04/2009 16:40

Syphilis is one of the most common venereal diseases. It reminds me of the vd only.

Oh and Percy love, Phyllis Pearce

cyteen · 21/04/2009 16:50

blech

BabyBaby123 · 21/04/2009 18:34

horrible - combined with Jean it would just be downright evil - why would you inflict those names on newborn twins?

VeryAnnieMary · 21/04/2009 18:59

I think it's lovely.

Have to say A VD would simply not occur to me when looking at a baby/small child. And if that's the best the playground bullies can come up with then I expect the child will cope.

VeryAnnieMary · 21/04/2009 18:59

(Though if your surname is Crabb I'd prob think twice)

tummytickler · 21/04/2009 19:43

BabyBaby123: Phyllis adn Jean are just adorable together!!!!!
I think i am loving it more and more. Keep the opinions coming ladies!
Any middle name ideas?

I wouldnt want to use Phyllis and Jean together as i would like to use them a first names for seperate children if our last two dc's turn out to be girls (and i dont change my mind of course!).

If we used Jean, them mn would be Primrose but dont think Phyllis Primrose sounds very nice!

Phyllis and Jean belong in an old people's home - or down the bingo hall i'd hardly call them adorable...

And how does Phyllis rhyme with syphilis? I don't get that

branchofreason · 21/04/2009 20:18

Correct me if I'm wrong..but, some posters seem to be encouraged and egged-on the more negative opinions a name receives.

"Ooh my dc will have an unusual name because nobody else likes it, because it's dated"
It's a bit attention seeking and not fair to the child.

gibbberish · 21/04/2009 20:20

Oh dear, no. Sorry.

tummytickler · 21/04/2009 20:29

Branchofreason - but the comments havent all been negative at all! I am loving it more because i am imagining it as a little baby - i adored this name when i was a child (along with Hazel which i no longer like), and i have never seen it as a really old lady name, i guess because i was a Railway Children fan, it has forever stayed a young girls name to me. I have never met a Phyllis young or old so i just dont make those connections.
And wouldnt it be terribly dull if we all called our children Amelia, just in case other people didnt like it or thought we were 'trying too hard' or whatever? - the Baby Names board would be really boring!
