I struggle to believe that Claudia originally meant 'lame'. It just seems too coincidental that the famous Emperor Claudius, had a lame leg. I suspect the word entered the Latin dictionary as a result of the emperor having a poor leg, although am willing to be proven wrong.

Anyway, it really is meaningless in modern day society. I named my daughter Claudia and get told frequently how many people think the name is beautiful and suits her perfectly. In Latin, Laudatus means 'praisworthy' so I think that has more significance.

I love the name Claudia (DD was very nearly Claudia). However I don't like the meaning of the name, at that was important to me.

hulabula · 19/04/2009 22:32

Claudia is the feminine form of Claud, a variant of the Latin Claudium which does mean lame/disabled in latin.

Still a nice sounding name, though.

Claudia is a very dear friend of mine

Matilda is becoming more common (although it is very nice)

I would go for Claudia

BeehiveBaby · 19/04/2009 22:35

Claudia very pretty, I know a 14mth old one. I couldn't do Cecily because it means 'blind'.

TheOldestCat · 19/04/2009 22:38

Claudia is lovely - I also know two lovely Claudines and a Claudette.

RachieB · 20/04/2009 09:49

I'm with you there Gillydaf, good old CJ. Loved it when the president called her by her full name.

I like Claudia, it is quite popular in Germany where they pronounce it Cloud-ia rather than Clod-ia.

Does remind me of CJ (another WW fan) but that is a very positive association. Strong character.

HarryB · 20/04/2009 15:56

Gilly, we will be too, but for some reason, I like to watch WW in the autumn/winter. Could be for the cosy factor.

Claudia Jean is lovely. Like MmeLindt says, a strong character. Have we talked you into it OP?

screamingabdab · 20/04/2009 17:53

I said Claudia Jane, didn't I ? clearly i was not concentrating.

I wish I was CJ

ruty · 20/04/2009 18:04

i love it.

ruty · 20/04/2009 18:04

dislike Matilda too.

rubyslippers · 20/04/2009 19:25

i think Claudia has it

i have never watched the West Wing - maybe i should?!

I do so love Mad Men but don't really want a Peggy or Betty
