Boys - help! we only do girls in my family

Ok we're all agreed (sort of) on girls names, but i have the feeling that i'm about to give birth to the first boy born in my family for four generations. BF & I have VERY different ideas on names, him tending towards the traditional and thinking that unless we know 6 people with a certain name already then is wild and ridiculous. I lean a bit more towards the outlandish, although i can see his point about boys not wanting fancy names, but we know so many Toms / Bens etc.

so... here's what we've rejected to give you a flavour of the issues:

Raphael ? love this BF says no and i can see it is a bit poncy

Gabriel ? as above ? first syllable gay perhaps scope for much teasing

Kit ? I love this but not Christopher and BF is opposed to 'nicknames as proper names'

Tobias (Toby) BF likes this I think it?s a very boring and brown name

Etienne ? wish I was French, otherwise a bit silly

Emmanuel ? see above

Emile ? see French thing

Otto ? i like very much but is it very German?

Rufus - dogs name

Barnaby ? bit meh

Darklis ? bit spooky / peculiar

Wish he was born in august then he could be Augustus Gus for short, but he's going to be a June bug

i've read out Nappyaddicts fabulous lists while he sits there saying 'no, no, no' So any suggestions of nice names somewhere between the traditional but not very common and a little bit unusual / interesting would be greatfully received. Not much to ask eh? x

personally, i think for a boy it is easier to be called tom or ben (or whatever) than any of the above - from a teasing perspective i think boys are pretty cruel on this one. once knew an edwin who had found not growing up as steve/dave/john v hard work indeed...

the name doesn't have to be as popular as the ones you mention - there are others (eg daniel, jonathan, gavin, robert, adam, matthew) which are more down to earth but not perhaps in the top 10?

Otto is ok

what about Oscar ?

Leannabanana · 16/04/2009 18:50

Kit is also short for christian....do you like that better than Christopher?

how about Julius? not quite june themed but gorgeous yes?

we have Emmet and Hector on our list as our top two....Hector just edging it...such a strong sounding name....

DS1 is called Oscar so obv I think thats a great name . I do know about 3 others though so not that unusual.

I really like Otto! Also Barney is OK and I love Rufus. I wanted this for DS1 but wasn't allowed to call him this as DH said it was a dog name! What about something like Louis, Max, Freddie, Leon? Nice names, not too unusual, but maybe not quite so popular as Ben/Thomas etc.

AuroraB · 16/04/2009 19:06

ooo i do like Julius, and i like the idea of there being a reason to be called something if that makes sense. a good friends kinds are called Louis nd Max, i really like Max but i think it would be confusing.

your positive feedback on Otto pleases me, i shall run past BF when he's home from work

thanks alll x

I like Otto a lot, and you don't hear it around that much. (DH just reminded me that the bus driver on the Simpsons is Otto... that wouldn't bug me, but just thought I'd throw that in!) What about Otis (Norse God) or Adin (means 'fire' which is just cool!)?

Also like Tobias and Raphael (Rafa for short), and love Emmanuel (don't think it's too french!).

Darklis sounds, well, dark, but I bet he'd grow up to be interesting and smart!

Julius is great, and Hector is great (I picture Eric Bana as Hector... a very good picture indeed!). How about Alban? Jude? Roman? Ronan? Lance?

Barnum · 16/04/2009 22:18

I love the first 3 you mentioned but dh vetoed those for our boys - we've got 4 - Jake aged 21 who was the only Jake in our area at that time - how things change!
Orin, Theo and Barney. We chose names that couldn't be shortened so Theo is just that and not Theodore! We also wanted something a bit unusual but not totally way out
I also like Arlo, Luca, Laszlo (Orin's 2nd name) and Hugo.

piscesmoon · 16/04/2009 22:34

I don't like any of them-but Christopher is a lovely name.
