What do you think of Elliot. if i can get my DH not to keep saying Ell eee ooott as in E.T. I really love it. But I am worried about a shortening as it has three syllables and a nn is inevitable. Advice please?

Elliot is a fab name

It can be shortened to Ells as well

frazzledoldbag · 11/04/2009 09:30

I like it. I know an Elliot and he isn't shortened to anything. (and he's a man not a child)

Saltire · 11/04/2009 09:48

I like Elliot. it's my family surname, good Borders name that.
All the Ellitos that I know are never shortened to anything

I know a few Elliots and none of them are shortened yet but they are all aged between 1 and 4.

spicemonster · 11/04/2009 10:08

I also have an Elliot and no one calls him Elly.

We tend to call him Elliotio rather than shorten it!

slightlycrumpled · 11/04/2009 10:24

The Elliott I know is never an Elly, my sons middle name it Elliott as well. I really like it.

edam · 11/04/2009 10:30

There's an Elliot in ds's Yr 1 class. Isn't shortened at all.

I don't like Elliot at all.

QuackQuackQuackQuack · 11/04/2009 15:48

I like Elliot but so many people round my way do not pronouce 'T' properllyit would end sounding really horrible

MadameCastafiore · 11/04/2009 15:49

Love it.

Would have been DS's name if DD hadn't already have been called Harriet!

ItsMargotBeaurEGGarde · 11/04/2009 16:20

I don't like Elliot for this reason. There's no obvious short name that isn't really feminine.

nappyaddict · 11/04/2009 18:28

There are people on here who have Elliots shortened to Eli (pron El-ee or Ee-lye), El and Els.

janeite · 11/04/2009 18:30

A relative has an Elliot. I don't much like it and yes, it does get shortened to Ellie. And I STILL want to do the ET voice when I see him!

Raahh · 11/04/2009 19:04

I have an Elliot and it is usually shortened to El.

Guadalupe · 11/04/2009 19:06

My nephew is called Elliot and we always call him Elliot.

bluebump · 11/04/2009 20:07

My cousin is an Elliot and he is only ever called that or El.

Clement · 11/04/2009 20:10

i really wanted to call my ds Elliot, specifically because of ET. But i didn't. i can't remember why not now. it would never occur to me to call an Elliot Elly.

CantSleepWontSleep · 11/04/2009 20:29

I've never known an Elliot shortened to Elly. El is the only shortened version I've heard in use, though Eli would seem a reasonable alternative too.

It is a wonderful name (and ds' middle name).

You should be prepared for lots of people to mis-spell it though, as there are so many variations re the number of 'l's and 't's.

MamaG · 11/04/2009 20:39

I love it
DH's middle name
the only child Elliot I know is shortened to El

bettany · 12/04/2009 07:27

Els is better, but I would worry about Ellie as it's the kind of thing I would say. Likewise, I would probably end up calling a Conrad "Connie". But some people are really strong about not using nicknames.

SebandElliottsmum · 12/04/2009 08:34

my ds2 is called Elliott with 2 lls and 2 tts easier for other people to spell that way.
his name doesnt get shortened, he only gets called something else if hes up at 5 in the morning haha!!!!!

RachieB · 15/04/2009 14:05

my son is Ellis (7) so similar
and we call him El / Els usually

some of his friends call him Ellie ,messing around but he doesn't care / mind lol

lol @ Connie for Conrad!
we have a Connor also ( 13) , and his brother calls him Connie sometimes!

but mainly Con / Cons / Condor!?! lol
