Sorrento · 08/04/2009 23:27

I know it's become a bit too popular down south but has it spread across the north/midlands yet ?
Am such a planner but I need to be ready with a name other DH will spring Mildred on me whilst I'm still on gas and air
(second choice is Georgia)

I don't know any but I do like it. A colleague's daughter was going ot have it (York) but she had a boy

tummytickler · 08/04/2009 23:34

I love Mildred actually - but dont like nn Millie!
No idea if it is popular up north as i am in south East, but i do think that it will become really dated really quickly. It just became too fashionable too quickly!

Sorrento · 08/04/2009 23:46

Oh don't Mildred Hubble is a favourite bedtime read in this house, I think it's grown on him (hides the Matilda books)

cheekster · 08/04/2009 23:50

I dont know of any Amelie's and as teacher so come across a lot of children, Im in south Yorkshire

Beautiful name, I had thought of it too but dont you think everyone would assume she was called Emily?

cheekster · 08/04/2009 23:51

I mean, when you say her name, people may think you said Emily, maybe its just me

Sorrento · 09/04/2009 00:02

That's a good point, I wish Emily wasn't so popular common

North west here
I haven't come across an Amelie yet. Loads of Emilys though...v v popular

OMGaBabyNameThread · 09/04/2009 00:12

How about Amelia?

myredcardigan · 09/04/2009 00:17

I know two. One is 2,the other 3.

Cheekster, I do hope as a teacher you are aware of your naughty apostophe.

Sorrento · 09/04/2009 00:23

The lady down the road has an Amelia and she is the devils child, I also once met a right cow of an Emily so I just can't bring myself.
We're in the North West so maybe I could still get away with it, it's mainly Ruby, Olivia and Emma is having a come back around here.

Just to add that the mother of the 2yr old is French.

sleeplessinstretford · 09/04/2009 00:38

it was in a film with a multi million pound advertising budget/promotional shedule-do you really think it's rare/uncommon?I am in
Manchester,if you are french then go for it, if not then hmmm

jabberwocky · 09/04/2009 02:24

I like it but I thought it was usually spelled Amalie?

Sorrento · 09/04/2009 11:48

No it's definitely Amelie.
The film was a while ago though wasn't it and whilst I didn't think I'd plucked it from obscurity or have the sole rights for it, I wondered if it was as popular in the North West, the wind must be blowing funnily at the moment, Mumsnet is not itself

I can vouch for suziseis - I'm in Leeds and have heard of quite a few baby Amelie's up here recently.

A colleague of mine was planning using it for her new baby. They have a really northern surname and to me it just sounded ridiculous to have such an elegant chic first name with a clunky yorkshire surname.

Thankfully she had a boy

As far as I'm concerned if you're not french don't use Amelie. It just doesn't sound right over here.

Sorrento · 09/04/2009 12:04

We are not French but I'm afraid that won't stop us, we are not Norwegian either but have a Freya.

Until I hear it in a Liverpudlian accent it's a possibility, just need to get pregnant now

KERALA1 · 09/04/2009 12:05

There are legions of them in North London. It is the French version of Amelia. If you are not French or have French connections think its abit of a strange choice.

Sorrento · 09/04/2009 12:14

Can you not just choose a name because you like it then ?
How strange

myredcardigan · 09/04/2009 14:49

I wasn't saying you needed to be French, just that as one of the Amelies I know is the DD of a French woman then maybe that's why I know 2 and therefore it is still unusual IYKWIM.

Ineedsomesleep · 09/04/2009 15:03

Cheekster, I'm with you on that one. We know 1 Amelie and everyone thinks she is called Emily.

Love the film though.

How about Camille or Oceane?

PuppyMonkey · 09/04/2009 15:06

I'm in Notts and I've never met one yet.

Amelie Up North sounds like the follow up film doesn't it?

Tinker · 09/04/2009 18:25

Kate McCann has an Amelie and she has a Liverpudlian accent.

Sorrento · 09/04/2009 18:29

She's from Formby, not quite the same as Anfield or Toxeth

OP posts:
CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/04/2009 18:34

I'm in Liverpool. I know of an Amelie and an Amalie locally. But I suppose we're in quite a "nice" area. I haven't heard it being used in Anfield or Toxteth - think they're still stuck on Chantelle and the like there!

(god, I'm quite a snob, aren't I?! )
