Give me boys names that have 'cool' nicknames

UpInArms · 07/04/2009 08:56

I cannot find one boys name that I love so I'm hoping to 'love' a nickname instead.

I cannot have a name beginning with the letter E as its the same initial as dd. I also cant have a name with one syllable due to our surname.

Family names that I like but cannot use are
Rueben and Marcus.

Any help greatly appreciated

Why can you not have a 1 syllable name?

Our DS is called Max Brown (Maximilian on his birth certificate). I think you have to be careful of short 1st and surname with girls but they sound strong on boys.

What about Felix?

Hulababy · 07/04/2009 08:58

Hm... thinking of shortnenings....

Joshua - Josh
Joseph - Joe
Charles - Charlie
Edward - Ned
Finley - Fin
Frederick - Freddie
Henry - Harry
Zacharius - Zac
James - Jim
Matthew - Matt
Oliver - Oli
Robert - Rob/Robbie
Thomas - Tom

Kaden- Kade
James- Jay
Leonard- Leo or Leon
Jacob- Jake
Bradley- Brad

stroppyknickers · 07/04/2009 09:05

Nico?

stroppyknickers · 07/04/2009 09:05

Gabe? (Gabriel) Gray (Graham)

UpInArms · 07/04/2009 09:06

Our surname is the same as the end of Finley so if we had Finn as a name whenever he said his full name it would sound the same as Finley IYKWIM

It makes choosing one syallable names quite difficult

Raphael - Raffy/Raff

UpInArms · 07/04/2009 09:11

I do really like Raphael but DH says no as he thinks we would need to be mediterranean to use it

I like Grey as a nn but DH wont use Graham as its a family name

william.....bill, billy, will.

my ds is called nathaniel, nate for short.

lots of "old" names have good short forms, but i can't think of any right now!!!

UpInArms · 07/04/2009 09:16

Cant use William - family name.

I love Nathaniel and nate but does your ds end up being called Nathan?

My dd is Patrick and for some reason (nothing to do with me!) is known at school as Patch. He thinks this is seriously cool - he's 8!

MumOfBaby · 07/04/2009 09:29

I like Nathaniel and Nate too

chimchar · 07/04/2009 09:32

NO!!! in fact, no one knows him at all as nathaniel, he has been nate or natey from day 1. he's nate in school on all his official forms.

am really trying to come up with names to suggest, but can't think of any!

Rhubarb · 07/04/2009 09:33

Richard.

UpInArms · 07/04/2009 09:35

Just run it past DH and realised its a no go as it has the 'TH' sound which DH pronounces as 'F'.

So it also rules out Ethan etc

peanutbutterkid · 07/04/2009 09:36

Daniel (Dan, Danny), Franklin (Frank), Raymond (Ray -- think Ray Charles), Nicholas (Nick, Nicky).

But I don't really know what sounds 'cool' to other people, so will slink off after that.

hoppybird · 07/04/2009 09:37

Joseph - Joe
Matthew - Matt
Stanley - Stan
Sidney - Sid
Christopher - Kit

troutpout · 07/04/2009 09:46

Alfred
Albert
Frederick
Johnathon
Sidney

hoppybird · 07/04/2009 09:46

oops - just saw your comments about 'th' and the Finely clue. You can scrap absolutely all of my suggestions.

hoppybird · 07/04/2009 09:46

Finley

Tortington · 07/04/2009 09:50

i have a Joseph and a Jacob

or Joe & Jake - which are pretty cool teenage to adult names.

which wasn;t my intention at all - as i used to call Joseph - 'Joby' when he was little ( it still slips out if i'm honest)

Jacob was Jakey - so they lend themselves to those yukky OTT mummy moments of little 'uns and also teenagery stuff too.

UpInArms · 07/04/2009 09:54

I do really like Jacob shortened to Jake. We once had a dog when I was a child called Jake,do you think that is a reason not to use it?

OP posts:
Tortington · 07/04/2009 10:03

i don't think so, we had a dog called charlie - but i think thats a lovely name too.

beware though, i hear lots of jacobs ( down south)

UpInArms · 07/04/2009 10:12

DH loves Charlie but we cant have it because of our surname.

I live down South so may be put off Jacob if its really popular
