Just noticed this name on another thread. Had been trying to persuade DH to use this for our newborn DD but so far not getting anywhere! I really love it but he isn't sure. What do you mumsnetters think? Is it a it twee or too unusual??

It's okay- the main character in those Darcy Bussell books.
Isn't it short for Delphina?

gigglechick · 01/04/2009 21:58

beautiful. haven't heard it used as a name, but it is an absolutely wonderful place.
Defo use it

georgiemum · 01/04/2009 22:03

Oracle of....? Wasn't she called Sybil?

babblington · 01/04/2009 22:12

tis my daughters name. please don't make it too popular!!!!

brainturnedtoporridge · 01/04/2009 22:15

Oh sorry babblington! I thought I was being really original thinking of this too! I honestly can't see it becoming popular. Can I ask what sort of comments you have had- pos/ neg, etc?

all positive, all my children have unusual names, but Delphi gets the most positive responses. She does get called Daphne though! Can be short for Delphine but my Delphi is just Delphi, after the Oracle. Bloody Darcy Bussell has a lot to answer for having spelt it with an 'e' in her books (Delphie - bleugh). be warned though, they live up to their names - Delphi is scarily precociously bright and her favourite phrase is 'I know!' She's 2.8.

Ok! thx a lot!

I know a Delphy and she's really cute. I thought she was French when I first met her - shows what I know.

gibbberish · 01/04/2009 23:32

Really like it. Knew a Delphi in times past and always loved it.

brainturnedtoporridge · 02/04/2009 09:13

I think Delphi could be short for Delphina or Delphine but also like just Delphi.

Madmentalbint · 02/04/2009 10:07

I like it :-)
I like Dulcie too, which it reminds me of.

CoteDAzur · 02/04/2009 12:10

Delphi is a place (ancient Greek - look up the Oracle of Delphi). Delphine is a name.

brainturnedtoporridge · 02/04/2009 12:29

Yes, it is the name of a place in Greece but there are lots of other names which are also the name of a famous city eg Adelaide/ Sidney/ Florence/ Sienna so I wouldn't say that rules it out!!

Sounds a bit like a Greek restaurant but I still quite like it.

MrsMattie · 02/04/2009 13:42

Never thought of it as a girl's name, before. Beautiful.

loobylu3 · 02/04/2009 20:44

I love it!

sleepyhead3 · 03/04/2009 20:32

Wouldn't have thought of this but it's really sweet!!

ramonaquimby · 03/04/2009 20:34

love Delphi, wanted to use it for dd3 but dh not a fan

Leannabanana · 04/04/2009 09:57

Delphi as a NN for Delphine is beautiful...

midwife99 · 09/06/2009 13:57

Our baby is due in July and we have decided on Delphi - we think it's gorgeous. Unusual but not too bonkers. It's from the Oracle of Delphi - a greek myth and a place in mainland Greece.

loobylu3 · 09/06/2009 18:42

gorgeous!

loobylu3 · 09/06/2009 18:43

Oh, old thread!
