Ned - what's it short for?

I love the name Ned for a little boy, but consider it to be a nickname. Which 'proper' names could be shortened to Ned?

Opinions on the name welcome too!

Edward

georgiemum · 30/03/2009 12:32

Edward. Grandpa was a Ned. Unfortunately he did move to Glasgow where the term has an unfortunate meaning.

bosch · 30/03/2009 12:32

Benedict I think.

We have an extremely old ladybird book called Ned the Lonely Donkey. Has sort of spoilt the name for me.

insywinsyspider · 30/03/2009 12:32

Edward - name we've chosen for dc3 due to the huge amount of lovely nicknames we can pick from (now just got to decide on which one of those we're going for )

Ned is awful. I'm not Scottish I'm Irish but it just sounds like an insult doesn't it. A Ned. You just know it's not meant kindly. I love Edward and Red and Ted though. Time for some Reds. I only know of one little Red. So cute.

georgiemum · 30/03/2009 12:34

I remember the donkey book. The cover had a sad little donkey in a yellow hat. It used to make me cry...

In Scotland it is used interchangeably with chav.

Non educated delinquent or ne'er do well depending on who you ask.

Sorry!

I would say Edward but yes, it is not a term of endearment around these parts.

coochicoo · 30/03/2009 12:37

Bit of a mean response Margot. You're such a ned!

Mmm, see what you mean! I do love Edward and Ted. I also know a Red (his full name is Redmond).

georgiemum - it does have a happy ending tho! (do you remember the little boy in his dungaree/shorts too!)

coochicoo · 30/03/2009 12:40

Didn't realise it had such an awful meaning in some parts. I'm looking differently at it now. I thought it was so cute, but Ted's winning through for me I think.

Edward can also be "shortened" to Bear (eg Bear Grylls).

I suppose Ned might at a pinch be short for Edwin or Edmund as well.

FannyJo · 30/03/2009 12:46

Ted is lovely as well as Ned and you can shorten to either from Edward.
Ted is also short for Thoedore

trixymalixy · 30/03/2009 12:50

ned

Ted/Edward is lovely though, might steal that if my bump turns out to be a boy

wabbit · 30/03/2009 13:03

Ned's lovely, my brother's name, shortened from Edward... My father's an Edward too but he's shortened to Ted...

Don't be put off - just use the name you like

questions · 30/03/2009 13:06

The Ned I know is an Edward

notagrannyyet · 30/03/2009 13:12

DN is an Edward. Family used nn Ned sometimes when he was little and I quite like. Didn't know about meaning in Scotland. Wouldn't put me off using it to be honest.

BalloonSlayer · 30/03/2009 13:26

I wanted Ned for DS2, but DH didn't think we should name him Edward if we were not intending to call him that, especially as the initial is different, whereas I have a strong dislike of giving children names which used to be just nicknames (I even object to Jack, I think all Jacks should be called John!)

Ahem, anyway... we gave up on it and called him something else. We live in the south and I have only heard of the "NED" insult thing on mumsnet.

I still regret it a bit. Although I know I would have called him Neddy Seagoon from within an hour of birth and he would have been Ned Flanders at school.

BalloonSlayer · 30/03/2009 13:29

Oh and I think it can be shortened form of Edmund as well as I seem to recall a certain Mr Blackadder being called Ned by Queenie once.

My name book said it came from "Mine Edward" eg: Mine Ed . . . My Ned
