Ellie - what do you think?

Dh is set on Ellie for this baby.
Would you think this was a nickname or can it be used on its own?
What do you think of it as a name and is it dated even?
Sorry lots of questions.

VERY popular around here (Oxon) though probably more so in 5-10 age group than little ones. I have 2 nieces called Ellie, one short for Eloise, one for Elliana. Also know them shortened from Ella and Eleanor.

Hulababy · 28/03/2009 22:01

It is a pretty name. DD's school friend is called Ellie and it really suits her.

ilovegreenbeans · 29/03/2009 11:08

I am one- never knew another until recently when I meet them all now at baby groups!

I think you can use it on its own, but equally, there are lots of longer names that it can be short for.

I know it short for:
Elizabeth
Isabelle
Helen
Elinor
Elita
off the top of my head!

MadameCastafiore · 29/03/2009 11:12

Every third kid that I know is called Ellie, whether it is their given name or a derivative of another name it is extremely common.

And please do not give your kid a hyphenated name like Ellie-Mae - they all sound very white trash IMO.

Leannabanana · 29/03/2009 15:58

my daughter is called ellie-mae and i can assure you that my family are not 'white trash' - what a dumb bigoted comment.

Lionstar · 29/03/2009 16:00

Many, many Ellies around her - of all variations as mentioned above. Niece is called Estelle shortened to Ellie.

I would assume it was short for Eleanor, which is a marvellous name

In all seriousness I wouldn't give it as a full name on a birth certificate - I'm all for using short versions but would prefer child to have option of more formal name later in life, should he/she become Prime Minister or something.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 29/03/2009 16:08

I prefer Ella. And love the names Isabella and Arabella.
Bit of a mean comment MadamCas

smartiejake · 29/03/2009 16:19

DD1 is Eleanor which she insists on shortening to Ellie- I wouldn't have chosen Ellie as the name to go on her birth certificate but it's quite a nice shortened version. One of her friends is also Ellie and her full name is Ellen.

By the way Geepers It's Nellie the Elephant not Ellie!

willowthewispa · 29/03/2009 16:27

It's a nice name but very popular. It doesn't sound like a proper name in itself to me though I'm afraid.

My parents had a similar issue with my sister's name - mum loved Rose, dad thought it wasn't a proper name so they chose Rosemary to go on the birth certificate and used Rose for everyday. She's 20 now and always known to everyone as Rose, but does have the option of using Rosemary for more formal occasions.

If you like Ellie, I would go for Eleanor, Ellen, Elizabeth, Elena, Elise, Eloise for an official name.

squeaver · 29/03/2009 16:29

Ellie and Ella both v v popular here.

plumblossom · 29/03/2009 17:58

My daughter is called Ellen Matilda, named after my Mum and Aunt both of whom sadly passed away. I chose these names because I wanted to keep them in the family.

KristinaM · 29/03/2009 18:03

i only know one Ellie who is 40 and its short for eleanor

there is only one at our children school ( 200 pupils)

i think its lovely but woudl only have it as a nickname for Ellen or Eleanor etc

MrsMattie · 29/03/2009 18:08

It's sweet, but if I were an Ellie I would want to have Ella/Ellen/Elizabeth as a 'proper' name. I love 'El' names.

mrsmalumbas · 29/03/2009 18:16

My daughter is called Ellen but was almost called Eleanor which no doubt we would have shortened to Ellie. In her class at school there are five Ellies - and there are only 12 children in the class!! So, a nice name, but very popular.

KERALA1 · 29/03/2009 18:23

Eleanor is very elegant why not use that then use Ellie as her everyday name? Then if she marries prince harry or something she can be Eleanor.

pandavark · 30/03/2009 02:39

god 5 ellies in a class of 12, thats hilarious

lowrib · 30/03/2009 02:49

Elodie

slim22 · 30/03/2009 05:08

very sweet but please give her a real name to use when she's a grown woman!

Elliane would be my favorite.

Sibble · 30/03/2009 05:16

If you're going to call her Ellie I would put Ellie on the birth certificate. I've never got the I'm going to name them one thing but call them another. I do like it btw.

MamaHobgoblin · 30/03/2009 21:55

I'd go with a long name that you can get Ellie from. Ellies are very adaptable and can spring from Elouise, Heloise, Elinor, Elaine, etc.

When I was at school, a loooong time ago, I knew three other Ellies in my immediate age range, so it's a pretty perennial favourite! So don't be put off by people saying it's too popular at the moment. If you like it, go with it.

Plonker · 30/03/2009 22:17

I know lots and lots of Ellie's but tbh that wouldn't put me off ...there are lots and lots of them because its a lovely name

If you like Ellie, then just call her Ellie, it is certainly a name in its own right.

As for "white trash" ...I guess you're entitled to your opinion ...

One thing that I would say about 'Ellie's' is that every Ellie that I have met has been a real little character, a definite livewire

Fimbo · 30/03/2009 22:18

Ds was going to be Elinor.

How about Elena?

Dillydaydreamer · 30/03/2009 22:22

My dd is Eliza which we shorten to Ellie sometimes.
DH liked Elizabeth, I liked Ellie and Beth so she was Eliza as a compromise
I know too many Ellies.
