Which do you like most, Ursula or Gemma; what do you think of them?

Me and partner disagreeing / can't decide ...

Thanks!

I like Ursula. Reminds me of the constellation Ursa Minor which contains Polaris the North Star. Just think, look in the sky and you'll see your daughter every night, fantastic!

Horton · 29/03/2009 18:36

I absolutely love Ursula and don't like Gemma at all. I think Gemma is a bit dated, tbh, and not in a good way. I'd probably think it was a great name if this was 1974.

Tinker · 29/03/2009 18:38

Oh, I met an Uschi, didn't know that. Like Ursula a lot and agree that Gemma and Ursula are completely different.

saggyhairyarse · 29/03/2009 21:14

Gemma but I have a Jemma so am biased! Ursula is lovely too!

Gemma Ursula Surname = Sorted!

I say Ursula Urr-shuh-luh

lotspot · 29/03/2009 21:21

Ursula reminds me of phoebe's evil twin from Friends - also makes me think of the word urine lol

Gemma is ok - prefer it spelt Jemma but will no doubt be shot down for this not being the realspelling

out of the two i prefer Gemma

pointydog · 29/03/2009 21:22

gemma

ursula is rather ugly

pandavark · 30/03/2009 02:36

don't like either. i find gemma very dull. ursula is more interesting to me, but it seems like an ugly sound to use on something as nice as your baby girl.

carolinecordery · 30/03/2009 08:19

Don't like Gemma but what about Ursula Gem? Little-bear-rare-precious-thing

ItsMargotBeauregarde · 30/03/2009 08:50

Lotspot, I don't like kr8tiv spellings, but Jemma and Jillian just look so much better to me.

Linzy is another one I could tolerate, without wondering how recently the parents had crawled out of the soup.

Jemma is very pretty imo. Emma, but with a bit more backbone. I wanted to call my dd Jemima with Jemma for short but had a relative called Jem (Jeremy) so thought better not. Still really like Jemma though.

FairLadyRantALot · 30/03/2009 10:34

Ursula always makes em think of the wicked Sea witch in "Ariel"....and well, I personally don't think it's a pretty name, sorry...

Gemma is lovely and all the Gemmas I personally know are total stunners (they are all 18 and over, btw...)

Gemma is more modern, I don't think you'll go wrong with this name.

I like Ursula but many people won't.

ursulaisalittlebear · 30/03/2009 18:38

100yearsofsolitude I salute you.

iSOLOvechocolate · 30/03/2009 18:42

If you saw the Gemma(5yo)I know, you'd avoid it!!!

Ursula is very classy IMO.

Pixiebec · 30/03/2009 20:34

I love both names - but have a special fondness for Ursula as when I lived in Germany my 'surrogate' mum over there was called Ursula. She was and still is an amazing, vibrant, lovely woman, and I'm all for naming after special people

Indiechick · 30/03/2009 21:10

No no, Sula is pronounced soola, not shoola. It's a pretty nickname.

edam · 01/04/2009 09:59

Oh, OK, so the Archers character just has a daft name?

ruty · 01/04/2009 10:01

I quite like Ursula. Not too keen on Gemma but don't know why. Probably quite nice but feels a bit 70's and [whispers] very faintly common. But needn't be really.

ruty · 01/04/2009 10:02

definitely prefer Jemma with a J.

Niecie · 01/04/2009 10:09

Gemma is quite nice.

Ursula no - or rather 'er yuck' Sounds harsh and I can't help the thought that the first syllable rhymes with arse.

Sorry - I don't know why but it has too mnay unpleasant connotations and I don't even know any Ursulas.
