Madeleine is a different name to Madeline. The second is French (I think) and pronouned "line" not "leen".

NoNickname · 27/03/2009 14:15

Sorry, that should be not "lin".

Madeleine is a Metro stop in Paris!

BonsoirAnna · 27/03/2009 14:24

Yes, as in Place de la Madeleine! As in the Eglise (Church) de la Madeleine!

Bella73 · 27/03/2009 14:24

Madeleine is French spelling (as BA said) and in French is pronounced Ma-duh-len (rhymes with hen) but in English is usually pronounced Ma-de-lin (rhymes with chin!)

Madeline is mainly US and is usually pronounced Ma-de-line (rhymes with mine)

Other -leen pronunciations not already mentioned would be

Charlene
Coraline
Celine
Josephine (oh no not that one but tis nice)
Aline

I have Madeleine as a middle name and I've always pronounced it Mad-lenne, two syllables.

I always called Madeline from the books "Mad-lin" but in the related film I saw she was called Mad-uh-line.
