All the names I like don't go with my stupid partner's surname!!!!

I have always hated my partner's surname! And I dread the day we get married and I take on his name.

The real problem is that all the names that I love just sound silly when put with his surname.

Has anyone else had this problem? What should I do, I am kind of set on the names that I love.

eek I think the problem is more the names you have chosen rather than Mann

edam · 24/03/2009 20:52

Mrs Mann does sound a little funny though. Friend of mine who is Asian refused to change her name when she got married as her dp is Mr White and she thought it was just too much... she persuaded him to change his name so they both have a brand-new surname related to White but not sounding as daft.

I had a south african boyfriend with the surname Mann way back when... I was never that keen, though there are many worse names. I think Johnson Mann is a nice surname for you and DC and he could stay just as Mann.

I think the names you like don't sound awful with Mann, its just that they sound more like surnames than christian names (with the exception of Luca) so wouldn't go with loads of different surnames.

Disenchanted3 · 25/03/2009 10:05

Our surname is Sales, now THATS shit, we can't put our name in email addys or they go to junk boxes!

I wanted DD to be ..

Poppy (Rembrance day anyone?)
Ruby (jewllers - 50% off?)
Evie (discount at Peacocks anyone?)

And obviously Summer is out!

So many names just sounded shite

Phoenix · 25/03/2009 10:10

I don't think Mann is bad at all.

Try coming up with names to go with our stupid surname (Cuthbertson). Ds is Lewis and DC2 will be Noah if a boy, no idea if a girl.

Try googling the names you like and see if anyone else called that comes up.

SarahL2 · 25/03/2009 10:17

My Ex's surname was Banks and he honestly couldn't see a problem with naming a son of his River!!

TheJester · 25/03/2009 16:05

Sales!? yeah you win disenchanted. that is hard!

KAEKAE · 25/03/2009 16:23

I do understand your point...Mrs Mann does sound funny, Sorry!

But hey, I really loved the name Florence....but surname is Lawrence so I could never have it! Although some people I have told this to think there isn't a problem with calling a child of mine Florence Lawrence!!

Redrose23 · 08/11/2023 00:07

Mr Mann lol

SneezyEvie · 08/11/2023 07:41

Mann really isn’t a bad surname. I thought you were going to say Butt.

MerryChristmasToYou · 08/11/2023 08:32

I know a family called Butt. Hadn't seen anything bad about it before.

Call the baby Manfred (or Isla if it turns out to be a girl)

I like the surname, Mann.
It goes well with many names; just not Lane or Luca.
Lane Mann - NO. Luca/Looker Mann - NO.
More traditional names all go well.

John
Roderick
David
Sebastian
Leo

Harper
Sophie
Cressida
Matilda
Lindsey

Sorry that I reignited this post. It’s from 2009 lol, the kids a teenager now

TroglodytesTroglodytes · 08/11/2023 20:22

Mann is quite a decent surname. I’ve heard a hell of a lot worse. I know some who married a Mr Crapper for instance.

Redrose23 · 08/11/2023 21:44

@TroglodytesTroglodytes

The love that woman had for her man, is unfathomable hahaha. We had a friend who loved the name Isaac all her life, and pregnant with a boy, calling him Isaac, having not thought remotely about her husbands surname, neither of them did and they were set on it. A mutual friend had to get them to say it several times before it clicked, and they went with another name. Their surname was cox. lol

Marshmallowtoastie · 09/11/2023 16:04

Really odd
you hate his name, you don’t want it and don’t want your kids to have it, it doesn’t go with names you love
he won’t compromise and so you have to (and think you should) just get on with it…because he has a penis and you don’t?

ofc do what you want but if you’ve made your decision there’s not much anyone can say to help
a pp was right, you need longer first names

Marshmallowtoastie · 09/11/2023 16:10

Sorry zombie

Ittastesvile · 09/11/2023 23:40

Zombie

theduchessofspork · 10/11/2023 23:00

It’s completely bonkers to change your name to something you don’t like.

Are you going to apply this to other things? It’s a mad way to go through life.

theduchessofspork · 10/11/2023 23:01

ZOMBIE

I do wonder if Mrs Mann still hates her surname though..

Redrose23 · 11/11/2023 00:21

I hope she didn’t name him manly
