Aphra - what do you think

well the title says it all really!
What do you think of the name Aphra for a bab y girl? It will be our fifth baby (but still ttc!), and one of my ds has an 'A' name, which worries me a little but . . . maybe not too much!
It is the first name of the first female to be published in the seventeenth century and i rather like that history - so opinions please!

I like it, it sounds like a few Irish names, like Aifric. Go for t.

SallyJayGorce · 01/05/2009 10:03

Aphra Benn - great all round. Wish I'd thought of that myself instead of Punky Lulu Twinkletoes.

Jaypickle · 01/05/2009 10:38

You mean theres another Punky Lulu Twinkletoes? I thought we were so unique.....

MrsMattie · 01/05/2009 10:39

Really like it. Strong and yet feminine.

Adore Aifric, too@Jaypickle. Liked it for DD, but DH laughed in my face

I'm resurrecting this thread to get some more up to date opinions on this name.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 12/03/2015 19:18

Never heard of Aphra Behn but I quite like the name

wearing · 12/03/2015 20:33

East of Eden is one of my favourite books and one of the characters is Aphra - like Smile

Sandybananapants · 12/03/2015 20:40

No, don't like it at all.

Belazu84 · 12/03/2015 20:53

Love

manicinsomniac · 12/03/2015 22:10

I really like it.

I've never met one in real life but it seems to be popular on mn (as a suggestion that is - evidently not many people use it because I don't think it's even top 500. maybe not top 1000).

Sophronia · 12/03/2015 22:13

Really like it. It does remind me of Aphra Behn.

GiniCooper · 12/03/2015 22:15

I know one.
She's a lovely lady.

Stout and stocky built woman. So the name makes me think strong.

HollyBdenum · 12/03/2015 22:19

It's one of my very favourite names.

DramaAlpaca · 12/03/2015 22:21

I'm not keen.

Showy · 12/03/2015 22:27

Opinion same as in 2009. DS would have been an Aphra.

VainVulva · 12/03/2015 23:37

My 10 week old dd is called Aphra Birdie Scout! Obviously I totally adore it Grin

We get so many lovely reactions to it....but a few Hmm faces also Grin

caughtinthemoment · 13/03/2015 00:00

Don't like it. It makes me think of afros and big hair.

PrintScreen · 14/03/2015 10:08

I love the connection to Aphra Behn and Steinbeck but the name itself doesn't sound pleasant to my ear. I keep thinking of the word Afrikaans.

Nolim · 14/03/2015 10:14

Sorry, i dont like it

I don't like it, makes me think of affreux in French.

Kittykatmacbill · 14/03/2015 13:43

I really like it!
Can be spelt Afra too, according to my absolutely ancient baby naming book and it means dust.

ClockwiseCat · 14/03/2015 13:47

It made me think of Aphid tbh but I obviously don't know how to pronounce it.

redrubyindigo · 14/03/2015 13:48

Not too sure.
