Is there anything other than Gertrude that this could be a nickname for?

I don't like it , but if somebody else used it, I'd be half expecting it. I think it could be due a mini-revival.

If you love it use it, it's normal and it's very unusual.

GossipMonger · 18/03/2009 18:14

I think it could stand as a name in it's own right really.

A bit like Jake or Max.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 18/03/2009 18:14

ermintrude?

princessmel · 18/03/2009 18:15

Ermintrude

I like it. But it reminds me of the baby in Goodnight Mister Tom

Madmentalbint · 18/03/2009 18:31

I went to school with a Trudie. She's the only Trudie I've ever known. She was just Trudie.

littlelamb · 18/03/2009 18:32

My mum is Trudi. She hates it. She spends her life spelling her name out for people (how odd then that she saddled me with a similar name )

nappyaddict · 18/03/2009 19:39

That people have difficult spelling it. Surely it can only be trudi, trudy or trudie!!

You'd be surprised nappy She still gets called 'Julie' by dd's nan! 4 years on and she's given up trying to correct her

Wolfblass · 19/03/2009 14:54

Oooh i love the name Trudi!

frazzledoldbag · 19/03/2009 16:22

I know a Trudy. Not short for anything, just Trudy. It's lovely, IMO.

cyteen · 19/03/2009 16:27

urg, trudie styler.

Bathsheba · 19/03/2009 18:06

I love Trudy - if I was to have another DD today she'd be called Trudy.

Not short for anything

hoppybird · 19/03/2009 18:08

When I see the name spelt 'Trudy', I immediately see it as the Polish word (which means 'difficulites' or 'hardships').

screamingabdab · 19/03/2009 18:16

nappyaddict I like Trudie, and I wouldn't think of it as a shortened version of anything else.

If you like names ending in "ie" what about:

Sylvie
Connie
Elvie
Edie
Tammy etc etc

nappyaddict · 19/03/2009 20:04

The problem with just having Trudy is that it's a bit too similar to Toby (part of DS' name)

Not that it matters as this is all hypothetical. My future DP probably will hate it!!

Trudie is cute as anything

I know two both in 40's - both one egg short of a dozen but I like that in folk!

dinkymum · 19/03/2009 23:26

i like it as name in its own right went to primary school with a trudy far too long ago now!

gauly · 20/03/2009 19:52

I thought "trude" was a normal ending for girls names in Germany, but it seems only Gertrude and Ermintrude are still used. I did find a list of old german names (when apparently it was popular) which included: Adaltrude, Beretrude, Engeltrude, Hiltrude, Magnatrude, Regintrude...

I think the only positive thing about that list is they make Gertrude sound good!

deste · 21/03/2009 23:37

My friend at school was Trudie, short for Gertrude. Her mother was Austrian. She was sometimes called Gertie or rather dirty Gertie. Hence the name change to Trudie.
