Your thoughts as a possible boy's name, please. Pronounced to rhyme with Ryan. Also considering Kiron. (Like, but can't have Kieron as name of an ex.)

Hi - my first thought that it was the name of that bloke off Queer Eye. Personally I don't like the name Kyan (I have an aversion to names beginning with certain letters - V is my least favourite, K probably a close second - just a personal wierdness) but lots of people don't like my DDs name. It would be so dull if everyone chose the same names.

Rosebud05 · 18/03/2009 19:00

I've heard 'chav' and various permutations said, but I've never really understood what it means, aside from it's not a compliment. I've always heard it said by middle class people about people who aren't. Sort of get it now.

P.S. Yes, thank goodness we don't all like the same names! I never had to canvass opinion with my dds' names, as I just 'knew' what they were going to be called, so it feels weird to not know what's right for this one.

I'd second the suggestion for Cian (or Kian).

At the end of the day, you're right though. You'll never get everyone to love a name - thank goodness we don't all like the same ones!

WinkyWinkola · 18/03/2009 19:13

I've never liked names beginning with 'K' except perhaps Kitty.

LuLuBai · 18/03/2009 19:48

Rosebud - how long have you got before baby is born? Can you live with Kyan for a while and see how it feels? I was like you with DDs name - the moment we thought of it it was 'right'. But this time round I'm struggling a bit more. Have been living with each name on the shortlist for a while and seeing how it feels. We have found a girl's name that seems to have stuck, but despite trying numerous boys names out for size nothing is sticking. So with 3 weeks to go, I am hoping that if it is a boy I get a flash of inspiration when I look at him .

Hulababy · 18/03/2009 19:57

I don't like Kyan sorry. It does sound made up, even if it isn't.

I don't like Kiron either, sorry.

Rosebud05 · 18/03/2009 20:13

Fingers crossed, I've got about 10 weeks left, so not panicking yet. My friend took over 5 weeks to name her son once he was born, so we've a way to go yet!

Kiran is a girl's name - your ds had a lucky escape, barleycorn!

Does no one like Kier?

kittywise · 18/03/2009 20:22

No don't like either sorry

slowreadingprogress · 18/03/2009 21:04

Don't like either name, they're both chavvy.

Kiron sounds like a cleaning fluid

Kyan sounds made up and is very ugly

duchesse · 18/03/2009 21:13

Neither does anything for me I'm afraid. Both sound made up or misspelled.

RachieB · 18/03/2009 21:45

Kyan looks and sounds made up

Cian is lovely

stleger · 18/03/2009 21:51

My neighbour (in Cork) is Cian. He is the most giggly 10 year old I know. Cian gets my vote!

lunamoon2 · 20/03/2009 21:05

I agree that it sounds very "made up" and rather oh lets go for a name that no-one else will be called, which inevitably means taking 2 names or even things and merging the 2 eg Ryan and Kian etc etc etc.
But if you like it........

Don't do it. You are not making your baby unique and precious by giving him a made up name that sounds like it came from Star Trek.

MrsMattie · 20/03/2009 21:34

Horrid. Made up. Yuck.

Kylan is a Turkish boy's name.

Cian is Irish.

Both preferable by a mile.

ADealingMummy · 20/03/2009 21:39

sounds dated to me

CoteDAzur · 20/03/2009 22:30

It is not a Turkish boy's name.

CoteDAzur · 20/03/2009 22:32

Kylan, I mean. Not a Turkish name.

bobbysmum07 · 20/03/2009 23:11

It's a million times better than Barnaby or Monty or Ernest or half the names on here that are considered socially acceptable.

tigerdriver · 20/03/2009 23:20

lol bobbysmum. Wouldn'tcha love to meet a baby Ernest. And his handbag.

kittywise · 20/03/2009 23:58

I think Ernie's cute, but I wouldn't call a son of mine that. It will be back again soon though.
I have a Ronnie and some people here were rather disapproving when I bandied it about as a possibility. However, in RL I've always had fab reactions.

As I said I don't like those names BUT it's your child, if you like it then call him what you like

MrsMattie · 21/03/2009 10:38

There is a boy at my DS's nursery called Kylan (or maybe Kaylan, but definitely pronounced Kylan). Perhaps it is a bastardisation of a Turkish name? His parents are both Turkish and his mum told me it was a Turkish name when I commented on it
