Hey what do you gals think of Neva or Amelie for a girl? Classy? Nice? Let me know....

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
schneebly · 17/03/2009 18:29

Amelie is nice

belgo · 17/03/2009 18:31

How do you pronounce Neva?

muggglewump · 17/03/2009 18:32

Is Neva pronounced as Neeva, or Nevva?

EvieBear · 17/03/2009 18:34

I would pronounce it Nee-va... I really like it but I'm not 100% sure it sounds like a proper name for some reason.

belgo · 17/03/2009 18:38

You can bet it will be pronounced Never.

Prefer Amelie.

Klaw · 17/03/2009 18:38

I know a 3yr old called Neva, it's Spanish (?) for Snow. She's lovely.

not as common in usage as Amelie

chaya5738 · 17/03/2009 18:39

I prefer Amelie

mazzystartled · 17/03/2009 18:41

Neva is one of dd's names
Because it snowed the day she was born
So I like it
Amelie is a somewhat en vogue and too pretty prett for my taste, but it's a nice name.

MargotBeauregarde · 17/03/2009 18:41

I like Niamh and I like Eve and I like Eva, but no, no, no to Neva!!!

Nieves is a Spanish name as Klaw suggests. I like that. Amelie is pretty but so like Emily that it's as good as the number one name.

Lulumama · 17/03/2009 18:42

DD's middle name is Amélie. Like both, but prefer mine!

mazzystartled · 17/03/2009 18:43

In fact I don't even know quite how it is spelt on her birth cert. as I didn't register her, and DH was guided by the registrar.

So there are Spelling and Pronunciation Issues with it.

dragonbutter · 17/03/2009 18:45

neva does sound a bit made up but now i know it means snow, i really like it.
would go nicely with my Sol.

EvieBear · 17/03/2009 18:48

I like Niamh and Eva so thought it was a good combo..

Would hate it to be pronounced Nee-var though - mazzystartled any experience of that?

OP posts:
Lulumama · 17/03/2009 18:56

tis a lovely reason to have the name thought mazzy.. is DD 2 now?

EdwardBear · 17/03/2009 18:59

I like Amelie
Love the name Niamh but not sure on Neva, think it would get said Never
Can you spell Niamh as Neve? (like Neve Campbell)

muggglewump · 17/03/2009 19:21

I have a Niamh so of course I think it's great and Neva sounds fine. I really dislike the spelling though.
Obviously I had to ask how it was pronounced so I bet loads of other will.
What about Niamh with Niamha/Neva as a nn?
I called DD Niamhy or Ni/Nee all the time.

SCH · 17/03/2009 19:22

My little girls called Amelie but alot of people do think she's called Emily!!!

hulabula · 17/03/2009 22:05

Neva is lovely and unique

Amelie is also pretty but very 'now'. Also risk of confusion with Emily...

On that basis, I'd use Neva .

mazzystartled · 18/03/2009 11:45

yes lulu, dd is 2 and 1 month.....
how does time pass so quickly?
the pronunciation thing doesn't come up a lot as it's not her first name, though when filling in forms and stuff people often comment. they seem, generally, to like it a lot when you tell them what it means.

RachieB · 18/03/2009 21:37

Not keen on Neva ( love Eva though!)

so for me it would be Amelie

EvieBear · 18/03/2009 22:48

Thanks hulabula, I think Neva is lovely.... I only think a certain type of accent/region would pronounce it Nee-var instead of Nee-va so hopefully would be ok but anyway plenty of time to go to choose. Will probably change my mind again!

not Neva, too much like Nevus which is a medical term for a red blotch on the skin

shoobidoo · 19/03/2009 11:02

Nobody would associate Neva with a red blotch.... unless you're a doctor perhaps.

I like Neva a lot!

KERALA1 · 19/03/2009 12:55

There are lots and lots of Amelies (well I know loads anyway). Also think its slightly random to use the French form of Amelia if you are not French/have French connections.

suwoo · 19/03/2009 13:02

I thought about Nevus (the birthmark) but only because me and DD both have one.
