Noah and religion

Would it be wrong/hypocritical/bit odd to call your son Noah if you have no religious belief whatsoever?

It's the only name on our list which hasn't been completely vetoed by the other person! Not sure I love it at all, but don't hate it, and with 5 weeks to go we are getting desperate ha ha!

i don't think so at all. nobody would think that calling someone David was strange if you had no religious beliefs

it's a lovely name

My friend has done exactly that DD. No religious belief whatsoever. And her other son is called Isaac......!

chaya5738 · 17/03/2009 14:24

This is a bit off point but Joshua is the same as calling your son Jesus (Jesus' name was actually Yeshua).

DancingDolly · 17/03/2009 14:28

Jesus

Well that's good to hear. I guess it's quite obviously Biblical in the sense that some other names aren't IYKWIM. My other worry is that it's a bit 'of the moment' (despite being biblical) and there will be millions at school...but that's a whole other post

No... there are so many of our everyday names which are biblical...we've just forgotton.
Noah is a gorgeous name btw

No, of course not.

I know a lot of Christians that struggle to believe in the concept of Noah and his ark full of animals !

ds is called Noah and while we do get the odd comment when it rains (when we had those fllods we got lots of mirthsome texts/phone calls) we arent massively religious, in fact i was raised Catholic, but its a lovely name that suits him. sand not as common as you'd think.

if we have a dd i want to call her Delilah, but dh has vetoed that because of its conotations

DancingDolly · 17/03/2009 15:29

Delilah is a great name, but I'm in Wales...!

We're going to call this baby Noah if it's a boy and the religion thing hasn't really entered my head i just love the name. Dh isn't as keen (he prefers Rhys) but i will win

My husband and i are atheist, and our sons are called Amos and Elijah so i think it is fine. Most of the popular names come from the Bible originally anyway. A beautiful name is a beautiful name!

Lots of names come from the bible-even ones like Elizabeth and James.I wouldn't worry about it. People go for Scottish names without being Scottish etc.
