my dd is Kate. She is 4 and gets very annoyed when others call her katie! I like both-but obviously my preference is for Kate.

cikecaka · 14/03/2009 21:31

DD3 is Kate, I like the name Katie as well but get annoyed when other people call her Katie. Love the name Kate but I suppose Iam biased Xmas Grin

pulapula · 14/03/2009 21:34

People call my DD Kate when her name is Katie- not sure why they do lol- even people who know us well.

RachieB · 14/03/2009 22:45

Prefer Kate to Katie / Katy

actually like Cait(lin) much more

KatyMac · 14/03/2009 22:47

I was Katy as a child
I was christened Kate

Now people who love me call me Katy........everyone else calls me Kate

KnitterInTheNW · 14/03/2009 22:58

I'm a 33 year old Katie and I've always loved it. It's not short for anything. For some reason the only time anyone calls me Kate is my DH when I've done something wrong...

randomname · 15/03/2009 08:13

Like Cate (think Blanchett) not keen on Katie, may be because I grew up with so many and they were all frilly girly girls and I was a bit of a tom boy!

lunamoon2 · 15/03/2009 11:23

Would definately call her "Katherine" or my preference "Catherine" on her birth certificate and then Kate or Katie as a nn.
To me Katie is very frilly/little girly.
Prefer Catherine and/or Kate.

Wigglesworth · 15/03/2009 11:27

Katie is nicer, I don't like Katherine at all though.

Wolfblass · 15/03/2009 11:47

I love Kate

All the Kates i knew have grown to be succesfull women, bright and independant.

Katie's? Slightly bubble headed...

edam · 15/03/2009 12:32

Agreed, Wolfblass, Kate is a very confident name. Every one of them I've ever known is successful - in career terms and in life, generally.

Maybe I should have gone for Kate when I stopped being a Katie, instead of opting for my real name...

nappyaddict · 15/03/2009 13:07

Kate it is much less popular than Katie.

KnitterInTheNW · 15/03/2009 14:00

Katie isn't just for little girls! I was never a frilly little girl. Not a tomboy, but not frilly. And I'm not slightly bubble headed either!

standing up for my name which is really nice emoticon

MargotBeauregarde · 15/03/2009 15:40

It's one of those names I just don't get. there were millions grwoing up, there are still millions. Can't it go away for a little while?!

katherine is a bit more refreshing than Katie imo. I agree with the poster who advised you to put Katherine on the bc.

I prefer Katy too. It just looks better.

ja9 · 15/03/2009 15:45

I love Katie.

With the option of calling Kate.

This was a very very close runner up for us for a girl's name. I love it.

chatterbox80 · 15/03/2009 23:48

I'm Katharine on my birth cert, but was called Katie until I started school. There was another girl in the class who was just Katie on her bc so ended up as Katharine in school! By the age of ten, got fed up with having one name at home and one at school so now always use Katharine.

Another thing to watch with the full name is the spelling - Katharine,Katherine,Kathryn, Catherine etc, etc! Though I now quite like the more unusual spelling of my name, can be a bit of a pain having to spell it all the time. Also causes problems in e-mail address as people always asume it is with an 'e' in the middle!!

LivingLaVidaLurker2 · 15/03/2009 23:51

My nan was called Catherine.... but always called Kitty - so it works for an older person as well!. It's a name that can go through the ages, Absolutely my favourite name.

gigglewitch · 15/03/2009 23:52

also think you should go for a longer version and then call her what you want. but that's just my take on it. Katarina (I know one but she's in her 50's) I think is lovely.
incidentally my dd has a long name which is shortened at home though she is choosing to use the longer one atm!!

BennyAndJoon · 15/03/2009 23:52

My DD is Kate on her BC

Our surname is LONG so Katherine was not an option

She gets called Katie or Kate

Great, strong name (as our midwife said, she chose it from our shortlist of Kate or Amy, 1 minute after she was born)
