Absolutely love it, (mainly because of Manon des Sources and Jean de Florette), I think it's unusual and pretty, but have to admit I think Manon McSomething might be a bit much....

I've actually suggested Manon as a potential name but OH hates it.

branflake81 · 11/03/2009 20:51

I love this name as I really like Marcel Pagnol. Go for it!

WaitingForVino · 11/03/2009 20:52

hmm

not familiar with it must confess and upon hearing it, an image of a burly mason appeared in my mind

MrsMattie · 11/03/2009 20:53

Nah. Said with a soft French accent - nice. In the UK, doesn't work for me.

Wilkiepedia · 11/03/2009 20:53

Nope not nice on all counts - sorry

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 11/03/2009 20:54

I love this name but I reckon a lot of people wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce it (which seems impossible I know as if you know the name it is obvious).

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 11/03/2009 20:54

not if British

drivingmecrackers · 11/03/2009 20:54

thanks lulu. I really like it but have always dismissed M names because of the surname, but at the same time it could have a certain ring to it?! () er, like marilyn monroe, david dickinson (!)

Used to know one growing up when it really was very unusual. Always thought it was odd and unattractive.

I definitely wouldn't pair it with say McNamara!

I like Mimi though, and maybe Mimi could be short for another much prettier M name. That'd be almost all of them.

I loved the Manon des sources films. But not even Emaneulle Béart could 'sell' the name Manon to me.

drivingmecrackers · 11/03/2009 20:57

thanks
i'm welsh and it's quite a popular welsh name - ok it doesn't sound as nice with a welsh accent as it does with a french one but i'm surprised some people think it would be mispronounced..? we're in london though so not living in wales..

Beachcomber · 11/03/2009 20:57

I live in France and here it is a very common slightly dated name along the lines of Sarah, Claire, Alison, etc.

It is still a pretty name though.

DRAGON30 · 11/03/2009 21:51

It's lovely, and was on my list for last babe - but he was a boy! Like you, I'm suprised
A) People are so unfamiliar with it/think it's odd,
and, B) Would mispronounce it , - I mean, well, HOW??

annasmami · 11/03/2009 22:00

I don't find it very feminine, personally.

suwoo · 11/03/2009 22:01

I grew up in Wales so am very familiar with it as a welsh name, didn't realise it had french roots.

Rachmumoftwo · 11/03/2009 22:02

Love the name, one of my faves, but may be a bit OTT with alliteration with a Mc surname- could be a Scottish superhero.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 11/03/2009 22:06

I love it. Think it would be fine with a Mc suname unless it's a Mc with lots more mmmms!

Why would you want a nickname that is just as long as the real name though?

seeker · 11/03/2009 22:08

Manon with a silentish final n?
Manen?
Man-on?

SugarSkyHigh · 11/03/2009 22:12

Manon to me is the ballet. in which Manon herself is not necessarily that virtuous. check out the story and then decide! But apart from that I rather like it. And with the Mc surname - well why not?!

SugarSkyHigh · 11/03/2009 22:17

Plot summary:
"Macmillan's Manon throws the focus on the lovers for most of the time, depicting Manon's relationship with the destitute poet Des Grieux. She may love him, but the wealth of the old roué, Monsieur G. M., also has great allure, and she flits between the two. In the end, Manon does end up with Des Grieux, but she pays with her life and dies of exhaustion in the Louisiana swamp, where she has been deported thanks to the vengeful Monsieur G.M."
